An AI-generated video joking that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is “officially back on his feet” has gone viral on social media just days after the Kentucky Republican returned to the U.S. Capitol following a three-month absence.
The video was posted Wednesday by the X account Dr. Clown, PhD, alongside the caption, “Mitch McConnell is officially back on his feet.” The post had accumulated more than 600,000 views by Friday.
X displays a “Made with AI” label beneath the video, indicating that the footage is not authentic.
The clip emerged shortly after McConnell, 84, made his first appearance at the Capitol in months following a fall at his Washington home in June.
McConnell returned to the Senate on Sept. 14 and appeared in a wheelchair while briefly speaking with reporters outside the Senate chamber. He subsequently cast his first Senate vote since the June incident.
“Time to get back to work, finish the job for this Congress,” McConnell told reporters upon his return, according to CBS News.
McConnell had been absent from the Senate for approximately three months after falling at his home and being hospitalized. His office later disclosed that he had briefly lost consciousness in the fall and was also treated for pneumonia.
He subsequently spent time in a rehabilitation facility before continuing physical therapy at home.
In a statement accompanying his return, McConnell acknowledged that his recovery was continuing.
“My recovery has been a long and often frustrating process, and the lingering effects of childhood polio haven’t made it any easier,” McConnell said, according to Roll Call.
“I’m still not quite back to 100%,” he added, while saying he intended to be present for important Senate votes as his recovery continued.
The viral AI post appears to play off McConnell’s use of a wheelchair during his return.
Dr. Clown, PhD has posted several other AI-generated or satirical videos involving McConnell. A mirror of the account’s recent posts lists clips with titles including “Mitch McConnell continues to reach new heights in his recovery,” “Mitch McConnell is taking physical therapy to another level” and “Mitch McConnell AI slop will continue until morale improves.”
The account describes itself as focused on humor and “the world’s current absurdities.”
McConnell, who previously served as Senate Republican leader, announced in 2025 that he would not seek another term. His current Senate term expires in January 2027.
His September return attracted significant attention because of his extended absence and his role in closely divided Senate votes.
The viral footage circulating this week, however, should not be confused with genuine video of McConnell’s recovery. The social media post itself identifies the clip as AI-generated, while verified footage from his Sept. 14 return showed him arriving and speaking to reporters from a wheelchair.
