Mark Consuelos gave television audiences an unexpected window into his wife’s recovery from gum surgery, revealing that Kelly Ripa was barred from speaking for a stretch of time following the procedure.
The revelation came during a conversation on “Live with Kelly and Mark,” where Consuelos discussed his wife’s absence from several live tapings of the morning show.
Musician Nick Jonas joined the discussion and reacted with disbelief at the idea of Ripa staying silent.
“Wow. That’s got to be the hardest thing she’s ever done,” Jonas said.
Consuelos agreed, pointing to his wife’s talkative nature as evidence of just how difficult the recovery period had been for her.
He called her “such a great conversationalist” while explaining his role in enforcing doctor’s orders.
“I’m trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions,” Consuelos said.
The surgery stemmed from a dental habit Ripa herself had disclosed weeks earlier on her podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera.”
Speaking with guest Michelle Buteau, creator of “
,” Ripa admitted to a pattern of overzealous brushing that had damaged her gums.
“I’m an over-brusher,” Ripa said. “I brush my teeth too much.”
She went on to describe the consequences in blunt terms, telling Buteau the habit required a surgical fix.
“It’s a good-bad habit. But I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums,” Ripa said.
When Buteau offered praise for Ripa taking steps to address her health, Ripa pushed back, revealing she had put off the procedure for years despite knowing it was necessary.
“Before you praise me, I was supposed to do it five years ago,” Ripa said.
Ripa explained that her dentist eventually delivered an ultimatum once the gum recession advanced too far to ignore. “But now, just so you know, the doctor was like, ‘Now, you don’t have the luxury of time,’” she said.
Back on the topic of recovery, Consuelos described a household dynamic shaped less by pain management and more by his wife’s inability to resist checking on her own progress.
He recounted a specific exchange from the night before the show aired.
“Last night she was like, ‘Can you look?’” Consuelos said, adding that he declined to physically examine the surgical site himself. “I’m not pulling your lip down,” he told her.
Unable to convince her husband to inspect the area directly, Ripa found a workaround, adjusting her position so Consuelos could view her gums without making contact with her lip.
Consuelos reported that the results looked promising when he finally took a look. “So I’m down there like, ‘It looks great!’” he said.
Consuelos also used the on-air segment to underscore how unusual this particular medical episode was for his wife, who he said typically shrugs off pain during routine dental work.
“She famously doesn’t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the novocaine,” Consuelos said.
Her reaction to this surgery, however, told a different story, according to Consuelos, who said her discomfort was a clear signal of how serious the procedure had been.
“Yeah, it’s painful,” he said. “But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.”
The podcast episode featuring Ripa’s initial admission about her brushing habits was recorded prior to the surgery taking place, meaning listeners heard about the condition before the operation and its aftermath became public knowledge through the couple’s television appearances.
Ripa and Consuelos continue to co-host “Live with Kelly and Mark” together, a role the pair have shared for several years as a married couple on daily television.
