A rocky transition to campus life has unfolded for one of America’s most recognizable college freshmen, as new footage reveals just how difficult the adjustment has been.
Kai Trump, the 19-year-old granddaughter of President Donald Trump, chronicled her leap into university life in a newly released YouTube video, offering fans an unfiltered look at both the heartbreak of leaving home and the chaos of settling into a new city.
The golfer, now a member of the University of Miami women’s golf team, began her freshman year in Florida late last month.
She is the eldest child of Donald Trump Jr. and his ex-wife, Vanessa Trump, who together share five children.
Long before she ever set foot on campus, the emotional weight of the move was already visible.
Dashcam-style footage from the ride home from her final round of golf before departure shows Kai overcome with emotion behind the wheel.
“It’s just really sad that I have to say goodbye to everyone today,” she said through tears.
She admitted the reaction caught even her by surprise.
“I’m not a very emotional person at all, so this is like really weird for me to cry, I’ve only cried a few times. I think knowing that I have to say goodbye to everyone tonight really, really sucks,” she said.
There was a small silver lining built into her timeline, however.
“I don’t have to say goodbye to my mom tomorrow, but [saying goodbye to] everybody else [tonight] is sad. I’m struggling right now, just thinking about it,” Kai said, describing herself as simultaneously “excited” and “emotional” heading into the new chapter.
So overwhelming was the send-off that Kai barely picked up her camera on move-in day itself.
She explained she was too “sad” in the aftermath of leaving her family to document much of anything, with the footage instead skipping ahead to her first night inside her new Miami apartment.
From there, the video shifts into fast-forward mode, tracking a whirlwind schedule packed with golf practices, team meetings and classes during her opening days on campus.
Amid the hustle, a familiar face showed up with backup.
Kai’s friend Emma arrived at the apartment loaded down with frozen meals after learning Kai claimed she “hadn’t eaten in three days.”
Emma explained her strategy for restocking the kitchen. “It’s all pre-cooked so she doesn’t have to do anything crazy,” she said.
Emma also detailed just how bare the pantry had become.
“She’s living off of diet sodas, so I got her fruit and prosciutto and we got her some pasta and bread and stuff, like basic foods, she’s basically living off of diet soda,” Emma said.
The pair later ventured out to shop and explore the city together.
Any momentum Kai had built quickly stalled when illness struck.
“I got sick with Strep on Wednesday, my first week of school,” she revealed to viewers, explaining that the diagnosis sent her straight back to her parents’ house. “I came all the way back to Jupiter because I was so sick I needed my mom to nurse me back to health,” she said.
The video eventually returns to campus, closing out with Kai reunited with her golf teammates after recovering.
This wasn’t the first time Kai had used her channel to document the growing pains of independence.
An earlier vlog captured a lighter, more comedic side of the transition, as she and her mother browsed a Target for apartment essentials.
During that shopping trip, Vanessa made clear that dorm-room maintenance would now fall squarely on her daughter’s shoulders, since Kai would be “cleaning her own apartment” for the first time.
Kai floated the idea of outsourcing the work back to her mother.
“No, I’m calling her down, like, ‘Hey Mom, my bathroom’s dirty,’” she joked. Vanessa wasn’t budging. “She is going to learn how to do that, or else it’ll just stay a mess,” she said.
A bottle of Dawn dish soap landed in the cart soon after, a pointed reminder that Kai would be doing her own dishes from now on.
Behind the humor, however, a far more serious storyline has been playing out for the family.
Vanessa Trump disclosed in May that she was fighting breast cancer, and by June she confirmed she had gone through surgery and was gearing up for the next round of treatment.
Speaking with Fox News recently, Kai opened up about how her mother’s diagnosis shaped the final weeks before college move-in.
“It was emotional, there was a lot of crying in the week leading up [to me leaving for school],” she said, recalling moments shared with her mother on the road. “[Me and my mom] would just be driving and we would just start crying together,” she added.
Still, Kai found meaning in the difficult circumstances, framing the extra time together as an unexpected gift.
“I was very lucky to spend a lot of time with her over the summer, because of cancer and going to treatments with her,” she said, adding, “It was a blessing in disguise, because I was able to spend extra time with her that I would normally probably spend on the golf course.”
Asked for the latest on her mother’s health, Kai offered an encouraging update.
“My mom, she’s doing a lot better,” she said. “Kind of after treatment, she wasn’t feeling very good … but she’s getting a lot better now.”
