MSNBC host Joy Reid recently deleted her X account, explaining her departure in a TikTok video as a response to the platform’s “abuse and negativity.”
Reid, known for her political commentary and presence on social media, shared that she had been considering this move for some time. “Today I did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while,” she stated in the video, which showed her account deactivated.
Reid noted that her decision to leave X (formerly known as Twitter), where she had nearly 1.9 million followers, was influenced by the platform’s current ownership and her growing discomfort with its environment.
“The reason for doing it, and saying goodbye to my followers over there, is because I hadn’t been posting for a long time,” she explained. “I just didn’t want to contribute content once it was purchased by its present owner.”

Before deactivating her account, Reid changed her username to “Nope,” signaling her final farewell to the site. In the video, she shared that while she had previously kept the account active to browse news and headlines, the process became more frustrating over time.
“To do the news aggregation and just look through it all, you have to wade through a lot of dreck, abuse, and a lot of negativity, and it’s just not worth it,” she commented.
Reid’s departure comes after her vocal support of Kamala Harris throughout the 2024 election cycle.
Following Donald Trump’s win over Harris, Reid expressed disappointment, particularly with white women voters, saying, “Black voters came through for Kamala Harris; white women voters did not.”
She further noted that this was the second time in recent history that white women had the opportunity to “change the way they interact with the patriarchy,” referencing Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss.
Reid’s exit from X mirrors recent high-profile departures from the platform. Former CNN host Don Lemon also announced that he was leaving X due to concerns over the company’s recent policy changes and potential legal issues.
In a similar vein, The Guardian ceased using the platform, claiming that it had become “toxic” under Elon Musk’s ownership.
Reid’s decision reflects a larger trend among public figures and media entities who are choosing to disengage from X, citing the increasingly negative atmosphere and policy changes made by Musk.
While Reid is yet to announce where she might share her commentary next, her exit from the platform underscores a shift among media personalities opting to avoid spaces they view as unhealthy or unproductive.
For Reid, this decision marks a clear stand against the platform’s current direction, signaling a preference for digital environments that align more closely with her values and tolerance for public discourse.
