Republican leaders in the House of Representatives are preparing action against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) following her recent comments regarding the late conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA), who is running for U.S. Senate, introduced a motion on Monday to remove Omar from her committee assignments.
Carter said Omar and the “radical left have normalized meeting free speech with violence.”
The proposed measure would remove Omar from the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
Omar currently serves as the ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections within the latter panel.
Omar faced widespread criticism last week after she made remarks about Kirk during an appearance with former MSNBC anchor Medhi Hasan.
She referenced Kirk’s past comments on gun control and other issues.
“But what I do know for sure is that Charlie Kirk was someone who once said, ‘Guns save lives’ after a school shooting,” Omar said.
She added, “Charlie was someone who was willing to debate and downplay the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police … downplay slavery and what Black people have gone through in this country by saying Juneteenth should never exist.”
Omar rejected claims by commentators that Kirk sought only “civil debate.”
In response, Hasan described such characterizations as a “complete rewriting of history.”
“Yeah,” Omar replied. “There is nothing more effed up than to completely pretend that his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so.”
She also accused former President Donald Trump of having “incit[ed] violence against people like me,” per reports.
Following backlash to the interview, Omar described Kirk’s death as “mortifying” and said her comments had been taken out of context by Republicans.
“These people are full of s**t,” Omar said in the interview.
“And it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness, and have, you know, empathy, which Charlie said, ‘No, it shouldn’t exist,’ because that’s a newly created word or something.”
She later attempted to clarify her remarks in a post on X/
Omar wrote, “While I disagreed with Charlie Kirk vehemently about his rhetoric, my heart breaks for his wife and children. I don’t wish violence on anyone. My faith teaches me the power of peace, empathy, and compassion. Right-wing accounts trying to spin a false story when I condemned his murder multiple times is fitting for their agenda to villainize the left to hide from the fact that Donald Trump gins up hate on a daily basis.”
Carter dismissed Omar’s explanation in comments to Fox News.
“Disparaging Charlie Kirk’s legacy, a God-fearing, honorable man, for boldly sharing his conservative beliefs is disgusting,” Carter said. “The radical left has normalized meeting free speech with violence, and it must stop.”
He continued, “No one who justifies the assassination of someone with different political views than them deserves to sit on a committee, and Ilhan Omar openly used language that incites violence toward her political opponents. Committees are for serious lawmakers, not hate-spewing politicians.”
Carter and Omar currently serve together on the House Budget Committee, where the Georgia Republican is pushing for her removal.
This is not the first time Omar has faced disciplinary efforts from House Republicans. Trending Politics reported in 2024 that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a resolution to censure Omar following her comments on the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel.

Don’t kick her out of a committee. Kick her out of congress. Aw heck…just kick her! Hard! Then deport her worthess azz back to the crap hole from whence she came. 😡
