Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were tragically found dead inside their Los Angeles home on Sunday.
Authorities currently have Reiner’s son, Nick, in custody. He is facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing his parents.
Officials revealed the cause of death on Wednesday, stating that the Reiners died of “multiple sharp force injuries.”
If Nick is convicted on both first-degree murder counts, he could face life in prison without parole or even the death penalty, according to the Daily Mail.
The 32-year-old said he was prepared to be arraigned, which is scheduled for Jan. 7. Attorney Alan Jackson is representing him in the case.
Jackson addressed the national tragedy while talking to reporters outside of court.
“This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” Jackson said. “There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. These need to be thoroughly and very carefully dealt with.”
“We ask that throughout this process you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward, not with a rush to judgment,” the attorney added.
Rob Reiner’s career in Hollywood spanned decades. He was known for his role in films such as “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Sandy Wexler,” and “Everyone’s Hero,” among others.
Reiner was a vicious critic of President Donald Trump and notably pushed the leftist claim that the president colluded with the Russian government in the 2016 presidential election against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Trump released a statement after Rob’s death, where he tore into the actor for pushing the “Russia hoax.” The president’s comments went viral on social media, with many arguing that his remarks were distasteful.
The president claimed that Rob’s death was due to his “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS).
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” Trump wrote.
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!” he added.
