A cardiac arrest triggered by a suspected drug overdose has been named as the official cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere, according to a report from NewsNation. She was 36.
The former child actress is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, who currently resides in Europe and remains in her father’s full custody.
Panettiere’s entertainment career began in infancy, and by age five she had already been cast in a soap opera role. Before her teenage years, she had appeared in an estimated 50 television commercials.
Two television roles ultimately came to define her career: a cheerleader with regenerative powers on “Heroes” and a rising country singer on “Nashville.”
News of her death triggered an immediate wave of tributes from fans of both shows.
Panettiere once opened up about the emotional demands placed on her as a young performer, recalling how directors repeatedly asked her to cry on cue once they realized she had that ability.
She said summoning increasingly dark thoughts to produce those tears took a growing toll on her as she aged.
She also described a complicated bond with her mother, who managed her career for a significant stretch of her professional life.
Panettiere said pleasing her mother was, for years, her primary motivation.
The actress had been open in interviews about battling postpartum depression and drug dependency.
During that difficult period, she made the decision to hand over custody of her daughter to her former partner, boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
Panettiere was found unresponsive inside a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
According to Greenville police, officers “accompanied by EMS personnel, responded to a report of an unresponsive female” shortly before 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon.
Police described the scene in a statement, saying, “Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Authorities opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death immediately afterward.
That inquiry has since produced the cardiac arrest and suspected overdose finding now being reported.
Her father, Skip Panettiere, addressed her death in a public statement.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said.
Hayden’s death echoes an earlier family loss. Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 after suffering complications related to an enlarged heart.
That loss devastated Hayden, who spoke candidly afterward about the depth of her grief.
“When you lose somebody that you saw in all the important moments in your life, standing right next to you, it just rocks your world,” she said.
Jansen’s death and Hayden’s now leave no surviving children in the Panettiere family, with cardiac issues playing a role in both cases.
Her death arrived just days ahead of her 37th birthday.
Former co-stars and longtime fans of “Heroes” and “Nashville” have continued posting tributes to her memory in the days since.
