A new legal crisis has engulfed Andrew Gillum, the one-time Democratic favorite who nearly captured Florida’s governorship, after he was taken into custody again this week.
The trigger this time: an alleged missed drug test followed by a positive result for methamphetamine, according to a report from TMZ.
Authorities in Alabama confirmed that Gillum was returned to custody directly following a scheduled court appearance.
This is now the second time within a six-week window that the former Tallahassee mayor has faced legal consequences connected to alleged drug involvement.
Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney John Oxford provided details of the case to TMZ, explaining that Gillum had been placed into a random monitoring program referred to as “color code drug testing.”
That program works by assigning each participant a designated color, requiring them to phone a hotline every day to determine if their color has been selected for mandatory testing.
Per Oxford’s account, Gillum failed to report for testing on a day when his assigned color came up in the rotation.
Court officials responded by administering a test on the spot during his next scheduled hearing last Thursday. That test allegedly returned positive for methamphetamine.
Gillum was placed back into custody immediately afterward, TMZ reported.
This latest incident builds directly on an arrest from the previous month, when Gillum was stopped by police during a traffic stop in Daphne, Alabama.
A vehicle search conducted during that stop turned up marijuana, along with three separate packages containing what later tested as methamphetamine.
Gillum’s current legal troubles stand in sharp contrast to his political standing less than a decade ago, when he was viewed by many within the Democratic Party as one of its most promising future leaders.
He ran a high-profile campaign for Florida governor in 2018, drawing significant national attention and financial backing from prominent Democratic donors and progressive groups.
That race ended in a narrow defeat to Republican Ron DeSantis, a loss that nonetheless left Gillum’s national profile largely intact in the immediate aftermath.
In the years following the election, however, a series of personal and legal controversies steadily chipped away at his public standing.
One of the most significant came in March 2020, when police and paramedics were dispatched to the Mondrian South Beach hotel in Miami Beach following reports of a possible drug overdose inside a guest room.
Responding officers located Gillum along with a second man inside the hotel room during that call.
Body camera footage from officers on scene reportedly captured prescription pill bottles and small bags containing a substance suspected to be methamphetamine.
Despite what was documented at the scene, prosecutors ultimately chose not to bring criminal charges against Gillum or the second man, stating there was insufficient evidence tying either of them directly to the narcotics recovered from the room.
The current allegations mark a departure from that earlier case in one major respect: this incident stems from a formal, court-ordered supervision program rather than a police response to a private situation.
That distinction means the new allegation carries direct legal weight tied to an active court process, rather than resting on an unresolved police investigation.
Gillum, once described as a Democratic “golden boy” during his run for the governor’s mansion, now faces a legal road that grows more complicated with each new development.
His 2018 campaign had once been held up by progressive activists as a potential blueprint for future Democratic success in Southern states.
That early momentum has largely dissipated in the years since, overtaken instead by a string of headline-generating legal and personal setbacks.
