Flagrant Foul on WNBA Darling Draws Attention of Florida AG

A single social media post written from a locker room has thrust a WNBA foul into the middle of a political standoff.

Saturday’s nationally televised game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky took a chaotic turn in the first quarter when guard Sophie Cunningham went crashing to the floor mid-layup.

Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington had wrapped her arm around Cunningham’s neck during the play, a maneuver officials classified as a flagrant 2 foul and grounds for immediate ejection.

Cunningham sprang up almost instantly, visibly agitated, and required her teammates to physically hold her back from further confrontation.

Rather than staying courtside, Carrington retreated to the locker room and used the moment to post “white privilege” on social media while the contest continued without her.

That post did not stay contained to basketball circles for long.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier saw the footage, shared it on X, and attached a warning aimed squarely at the league.

“The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida, because I’ll be charging people with assault,” Uthmeier wrote.

Outkick noted that Florida hasn’t actually hosted a WNBA team in over twenty years — the Orlando Miracle folded into what is now the Connecticut Sun back in 2002, making the state an unlikely flashpoint for the league regardless.

By definition, a clothesline foul happens when a defender uses an outstretched arm to catch an opponent across the neck, stopping their momentum abruptly and often violently.

Speaking to reporters after the final buzzer, Cunningham made clear she wasn’t looking for a rivalry with Carrington.

“Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary,” she said. “I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent-up stuff. So, get your s— off. That’s fine. I can take it.”

This season’s Fever matchups have consistently ranked among the most-watched in women’s basketball, a trend fueled partly by superstar Caitlin Clark and partly by Cunningham’s willingness to speak her mind on camera.

Much of that attention intensified after Cunningham told an interviewer she believes biological men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports — a position she refused to retract even as transgender advocacy groups called for a public apology.

Long before that interview, Cunningham had already built a reputation inside the league as Clark’s on-court guardian, stepping in whenever the rookie phenom absorbed hard fouls that critics link to resentment over her $500,000 salary and roughly $16 million in endorsement income.

One such moment went viral in June, when Cunningham locked eyes with Phoenix Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner and held a single finger raised and pointed at her for a full 22 seconds without saying a word.

Bonner had warned Cunningham not to point at her, which only prompted the guard to extend her arm further and hold the pose in total silence.

“I didn’t say a word,” Cunningham said afterward, recounting the standoff that later spawned internet memes and printed T-shirts.

That entire episode traced back to an on-court tangle between Clark and Bonner that resulted in technical fouls for both, with Cunningham inserting herself as her teammate’s defender in the aftermath.

Off the court, Cunningham carries a black belt in Taekwondo, a distinction she earned as a child years before turning professional.

As of now, the WNBA has not confirmed whether Carrington will face supplemental punishment — either for the foul itself or for the message she posted mid-game.

Uthmeier’s threat of assault charges likewise remains unanswered by league officials, leaving the standoff between Florida’s attorney general and the WNBA unresolved.
