A short-term rental in San Diego, California, has become the center of online fascination after a family says they walked into their vacation home and found a framed photograph of themselves already hanging on the wall.
The strange encounter was documented by TikTok creator Aubrey Birrell, who posts under the username aubsbirrell, and the clip has since spread rapidly across the platform.
According to Birrell, the unease set in almost the moment her family stepped through the door of the rental property.
“We get to our Airbnb in San Diego,” Birrell said in the video. “It’s unsettling. Unsettling.”
It was Birrell’s father who first spotted something off about a piece of wall art inside the home, initially mistaking his own image for a stranger’s.
“My dad is, like, ‘this looks like me,’” Birrell said, recounting her father’s reaction.
A closer look at the framed picture confirmed his suspicion was not a coincidence of resemblance — it was in fact a photo of him.
Birrell identified the other people pictured alongside her father as her siblings, Libby and Brady, both captured in the image roughly a decade earlier.
“No, this is my dad,” Birrell said. “That’s my sister Libby… 10 years ago. And that’s Brady, my brother, 10 years ago.”
To remove any doubt, the family pointed to another detail that sealed the identification: the swimsuits worn in the photograph.
“We have those swimsuits. We are literally in this picture,” Birrell said.
Birrell’s video stopped short of explaining how a personal family photograph ended up decorating the walls of a rental property they had never previously booked.
Visibly rattled by the find, Birrell told her followers, “This can’t be real,” before pivoting to humor to defuse the situation.
“We think this is crazy, so let’s stop spiraling,” she added.
The mystery has not been solved publicly, and Birrell has not identified the Airbnb host or explained any possible connection between her family and the property owner.
No details have emerged about the specific neighborhood or address of the San Diego rental in question.
The clip has continued to gain traction on TikTok, drawing a flood of comments from users captivated by the odd nature of the discovery.
One commenter likened the scenario to the opening scene of a scary movie, writing that it “sounds like the start of a horror movie.”
Other users flooded the comments section with their own theories, ranging from stock-photo mix-ups to far stranger explanations, though none have been confirmed.
The video’s popularity has kept the story alive online, even though no follow-up video or update has been released detailing how — or if — the mystery was ever resolved.
Birrell has not indicated whether she or her family raised the issue directly with the property host or Airbnb itself.
It remains unclear whether the family cut their stay short or continued their trip as planned after the unsettling discovery.
There is no indication that this incident is connected to any wider pattern of similar occurrences at other short-term rental properties.
Birrell’s original video remains live on her TikTok account and continues to draw new viewers and reactions as it circulates.
The incident has not been independently verified by outside parties beyond the account given by Birrell in her video.
