The Department of Justice has opened a grand jury investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, marking a significant development in ongoing legal and political battles involving the high-profile Democrat.
The probe, based in Albany, focuses on potential deprivation of rights allegations against James, who has served as the state’s Attorney General since 2019.
Sources close to the investigation told Fox News that James’s office received subpoenas this week for documents related to her conduct, signaling the investigation is actively gathering evidence.
Key among the documents requested are materials tied to James’s 2022 prosecution of President Donald Trump.
That case centered on allegations that the Trump Organization committed mortgage fraud by inflating the value of its real estate assets.
The lawsuit culminated in a nearly half-billion-dollar judgment against Trump’s business empire.
James’s aggressive legal campaign against Trump began soon after she took office and has been a defining feature of her tenure, as Trending Politics reported.
She ran on a promise to hold Trump accountable, famously stating, “If average New Yorkers went into a bank and submitted false documents, the government would throw the book at them, and the same should be true for former presidents.”
Her pursuit of Trump has extended well beyond mortgage fraud. James filed multiple lawsuits against Trump’s administration during his presidency, challenging policies such as the suspension of federal student loan payments, restrictions on transgender healthcare for minors, and cuts to federally funded social welfare programs.
However, James’s own legal troubles have complicated her position. Earlier this year, federal mortgage regulators referred her for criminal prosecution, alleging she misrepresented her primary residence to obtain more favorable mortgage terms. The referral led to a separate grand jury subpoena connected to these accusations.
James has vehemently denied the allegations against her. “I am confident that the truth will come out, and I will be fully exonerated,” she said in a recent statement.
The investigation into James presents a striking reversal for the powerful attorney general, who has made a name for herself prosecuting others, including President Trump, on serious charges.
The situation has not gone unnoticed by Trump, who took to social media to condemn James.
“Letitia James, a totally corrupt politician, should resign from her position as New York State Attorney General, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote. His comments underscored the bitter rivalry between the former president and James, which has played out publicly over the past several years.
