Thirteen people were hospitalized after an employee shuttle bus crashed into a concrete barrier at Newark Liberty International Airport early Monday, triggering a major emergency response outside Terminal B.
Footage from the scene showed the front of the bus crushed against the barrier, with its windshield and passenger-side door badly damaged and debris scattered across the roadway.
The crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on the Terminal B Departures Level 3 roadway, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Three people suffered serious injuries, while another 10 sustained minor injuries, according to local reports. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.
All 13 people were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment following the collision.
The vehicle was being used as an employee shuttle when it crashed, according to transportation officials. CBS News New York reported that video appeared to show the bus striking a concrete wall as it attempted to exit the terminal.
Images and video captured after the collision showed extensive damage concentrated around the front and passenger side of the vehicle.
The windshield was shattered, while the passenger door and front wheel-well area were also heavily damaged.
Police tape was placed around the crash site as Port Authority police, emergency medical personnel and other first responders worked around the wreckage.
The collision forced authorities to temporarily close the Terminal B Departures Level 3 roadway while crews cleared debris and investigators examined the scene.
Airport officials directed passengers being dropped off for Terminal B departures to use Level 2 during the police response.
“Due to PAPD activity, please drop off all Terminal B Departures on Level 2,” Newark Liberty International Airport advised passengers Monday morning.
The damaged bus was eventually removed from the scene, and News 12 New Jersey reported later Monday that the Level 3 roadway had reopened.
Despite the disruption around Terminal B, the crash did not affect air traffic at the airport, according to News 12.
Authorities have not publicly identified the driver or any of the 13 people who were injured.
Officials also have not announced what caused the shuttle to crash into the barrier.
The Port Authority Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the wreck, including what happened immediately before the impact.
Early reports from the scene underscored the scale of the emergency response, per Trending Politics.
RLS Media reported that preliminary EMS information indicated a mass-casualty incident had initially been declared while emergency personnel evaluated the passengers.
Subsequent reports established that 13 people were hospitalized and that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The collision came during the early-morning hours at one of the busiest airports serving the New York metropolitan area.
Newark Liberty sits in New Jersey and handles both domestic and international traffic for the region.
The crash remained under investigation Monday, with authorities yet to release additional information about what may have caused the employee shuttle to leave its path and strike the concrete barrier.
