DC Emergency: US Officials Hospitalized

A mysterious medical phenomenon that has troubled American diplomats and intelligence officials for years is drawing renewed attention after reports emerged that at least six U.S. government personnel are receiving treatment for suspected cases of “Havana Syndrome” at a military hospital near Washington, D.C.

The latest developments have raised fresh national security questions, particularly because the suspected incidents reportedly occurred on American soil rather than at diplomatic facilities overseas.

Investigative journalist Catherine Herridge reported that the six cases emerged after the summer and involve patients being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The individuals reportedly have confirmed or suspected brain injuries associated with what federal authorities formally call Anomalous Health Incidents, or AHIs.

Walter Reed is home to the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a facility specializing in traumatic brain injuries that has previously treated government personnel reporting similar symptoms.

But the location of the latest suspected incidents is attracting particular attention.

Herridge previously reported more than two dozen suspected directed-energy incidents inside the United States, including a cluster involving a government facility in Northern Virginia.

At least two senior government personnel involved in directed-energy-related projects have also reportedly experienced suspicious incidents around Washington in recent months.

One individual reportedly works for the Department of War, while another is employed within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Some of those affected were allegedly involved in research concerning directed-energy technology or related government projects.

The apparent overlap has prompted questions about whether American personnel could be targeted by an unidentified adversary using sophisticated technology.

However, there has been no official determination that a directed-energy weapon caused the reported injuries, and investigators have not publicly identified any government or organization responsible, per the Conservative Brief.

The accounts provided by some suspected victims are particularly unusual.

According to Herridge, several individuals reported noticing suspicious vehicles nearby shortly before experiencing sudden shocks, disorientation or other neurological symptoms.

Others described strange behavior from their pets.

“I’ve had people tell me that they’ve been walking their dogs” when the animals suddenly reacted, Herridge said.

Those accounts have attracted interest because they suggest the individuals noticed unusual circumstances surrounding their symptoms.

Still, neither the reported vehicles nor the animals’ reactions establishes that the individuals were attacked.

The mystery stretches back nearly a decade.

Havana Syndrome first attracted widespread attention in 2016, when American diplomats and intelligence personnel stationed in Cuba began reporting unexplained neurological problems.

Similar complaints subsequently emerged among American government personnel and their families in other countries.

Symptoms have included dizziness, ringing in the ears, vertigo, blurred vision and other neurological disturbances.

Some individuals also described hearing unusual sounds or experiencing sudden, intense physical sensations before developing symptoms.

The incidents prompted years of investigation into whether the illnesses resulted from deliberate attacks, environmental factors, unrelated medical conditions or multiple causes.

In 2023, an American intelligence assessment concluded that a foreign adversary was “very unlikely” to be responsible for the broader collection of reported incidents.

That conclusion, however, did not settle the controversy.

Some affected personnel and lawmakers continued questioning whether investigators had adequately examined individual cases.

The debate intensified in 2024 when a joint investigation by The Insider, CBS News’ 60 Minutes and Der Spiegel reported evidence potentially linking Russian military intelligence personnel to certain suspected incidents.

That investigation focused partly on members of Russia’s GRU Unit 29155 and their reported proximity to locations associated with some affected Americans.

The reporting raised additional questions but did not conclusively establish Russian responsibility for the incidents.

Now, the emergence of new suspected cases near Washington is bringing those unresolved questions back into focus.

According to the latest reporting, federal authorities are examining whether a foreign entity could be connected to the incidents.

No definitive attribution has been announced.

Congress has also continued examining the government’s response.

The House Intelligence Committee has investigated how federal agencies handled reports from affected personnel and communicated their findings.

Former State Department official Mark Lenzi recently disclosed that he testified before the committee concerning alleged microwave attacks and the treatment of individuals who reported symptoms.

Walter Reed did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the latest patients, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

For the six reportedly receiving treatment, the immediate concern is their medical recovery.

For federal investigators, the challenge is determining whether the reported incidents share a common cause — and whether any involve deliberate hostile activity.

Nearly a decade after Havana Syndrome first emerged, its origins remain disputed.

And with new suspected cases reportedly appearing near the nation’s capital, the questions surrounding the mysterious condition are far from resolved.
