The DeKalb County Police Department has responded to a series of bomb threats targeting polling locations in Georgia, heightening tension in the critical final hours of voting.
Authorities reported a total of seven bomb threats across multiple locations on Tuesday, with five sites within DeKalb County and two in neighboring areas. Georgia polling places are scheduled to close at 7 pm, making the timing of these threats particularly alarming.
According to a press release from DeKalb County officials, law enforcement has been dispatched to conduct bomb sweeps at the affected sites to ensure voter safety.
The precincts in DeKalb County that received threats include New Bethel AME Church at 8350 Rockbridge Rd. in Lithonia, New Life Community Center at 3592 Flat Shoals Rd. in Decatur, North DeKalb Senior Center at 3393 Malone Dr. in Chamblee, Reid H. Cofer Library at 5234 Lavista Rd. in Tucker, and Wesley Chapel Library at 2861 Wesley Chapel Rd. in Decatur.
In addition, two locations outside of DeKalb County were also targeted. One was the Stonecrest site at the old Sam’s Club, which is not currently serving as a polling location, and the other was Salem Panola Library at 5137 Salem Rd. in Lithonia.
“Every asset that we have will be deployed to ensure that every citizen who wants to vote will be given that opportunity and every vote cast will be counted,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said in response to the threats.
His statement emphasized the county’s commitment to maintaining voter safety and the integrity of the election process despite these alarming disruptions.
