A journalist has asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate Rep. Lauren Boebert, alleging the Colorado Republican had sexual relationships with staff members and paid one of them to stay quiet.
David Wheeler filed the complaint. It names three current and former staffers. It alleges Boebert paid $200,000 to one of them “to secure her silence and forestall the threatened complaint.”
Boebert’s office denies all of it. A spokesperson told The Daily Mail, “Congresswoman Lauren Boebert rejects these allegations as utterly false and there is no truth to them whatsoever.”
The statement continued: “This is nothing more than a politically motivated stunt designed to manipulate the ethics process, create headlines, smear her, and generate clickbait.”
Her office also went after Wheeler’s track record.
“They come from an activist who has long recycled sensational claims, including numerous baseless accusations previously fact-checked as false,” the representative said.
Wheeler’s website displays a “Fire Boebert” graphic. He has also published a coloring book with a drawing of Boebert on the cover.
Wheeler responded to The Daily Mail with a lengthy reply and a list of Boebert statements he says show a lack of truthfulness.
“Lauren Boebert clearly has a problem telling the truth and taking responsibility for her actions,” he said. He added, “We stand 100 percent by our story and sources… my job is to expose Lauren Boebert for the fraud she is with facts.”
The complaint reaches the House Ethics Committee while Boebert holds a prominent place in the chamber’s debate over sexual misconduct. She has joined Reps.
Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Anna Paulina Luna of Florida in calling out lawmakers from both parties who face such accusations.
Boebert has asked publicly why certain politicians are “so horny” and said accused members need to “find Jesus.”
She recently voted to censure Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards of North Carolina.
The Ethics Committee found he engaged in “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” with younger staffers, after reports that he gave them gifts that included towers of ice cream and firearms, and that he wrote them poems.
Edwards apologized to his wife, denied meaning anything inappropriate, and decided against seeking re-election.
Boebert also urged that former Democratic Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales lose their pensions after both resigned over misconduct allegations. Both men deny the claims.
In March, she called it “absolutely disgusting” when Republicans blocked a measure that would have made records of congressional misconduct probes public.
Her relationship with President Donald Trump has also cooled. Trump has feuded with the 39-year-old third-term lawmaker over the Epstein files and her support for Rep. Thomas Massie.
In May, shortly before her primary win, Trump told reporters, “If somebody comes along, I’d look.” He has also called her “Weak-Minded Lauren Boebert.” She replied that she was “not mad or offended,” adding, “I knew the risks when I agreed to stand by my friend Thomas Massie.”
Massie added another detail on Tucker Carlson’s podcast earlier this month.
He said Boebert went to the Situation Room last year, where she faced pressure to remove her name from a discharge petition that would force a House vote on the Epstein files.
She kept her name on it.
In December, Trump vetoed the Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act, which would have funded a water pipeline for southeastern Colorado, a region covering roughly a third of the state.
“The President vetoed a bill that would’ve brought water to a large portion of Colorado,” Massie told Carlson. He then questioned why Boebert’s constituents were bearing the cost of her stance on the files.
Boebert also drew attention in February during Hillary Clinton’s closed-door deposition on the Epstein files in New York. She photographed the former secretary of state and sent the image to MAGA influencer Benny Johnson.
Clinton’s lawyers asked to halt the proceedings after the photo circulated online. House rules prohibit lawmakers and witnesses from taking pictures during closed-door testimony. Boebert left shortly afterward.
Boebert now runs for re-election in Colorado’s 4th District.
She won the primary over four other candidates, despite accusations of carpetbagging over her district switch and a controversy over a video of her vaping and causing a disturbance at a Denver production of “Beetlejuice.”
“While the crops may be slightly different here in CD4, the values are not,” she said. She pledged to fight for a shutdown of the Southern border.
“A lot of folks criticize my approach on things, but I learned very early on in Washington, D.C., that nothing happens without force,” Boebert said.
Voter Gilbert Kendzior said the theater incident and district switch did not sway him.
“Who’s perfect?” he said. He said he voted for Boebert because she shakes things up. “We need to get rid of the old farts,” he said.
Boebert’s family has drawn headlines too. Her 21-year-old son, Tyler, pleaded guilty to child abuse and negligence charges without injury, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
Authorities say he left his two-year-old son, Josiah, unattended at his mother’s Windsor home in February, and the boy was found wandering near a lake.
Prosecutors recommended up to 30 days in jail followed by 12 months of supervised probation, and asked a judge to order a parenting program.
Boebert told 9News there is “no excuse” for her son’s actions.
