Beloved MAGA Republican Wins Reelection

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) delivered a notable victory in Tuesday’s midterm elections, winning reelection in Texas despite a sweeping Democratic surge that toppled several prominent Republicans across the state.

While Democrats celebrated historic victories in Texas, Gill managed to hold onto his congressional seat by approximately 10 percentage points, outperforming several high-profile Republicans in the counties he represents.

The 26th Congressional District representative secured 54.5% of the vote, totaling approximately 182,648 ballots.

His Democratic challenger, Steven Shook, received 44.2%, while Libertarian candidate Phil Gray finished with approximately 1.3%.

The results ensured Gill would return to Washington for a second term, even as his party suffered significant setbacks elsewhere.

But the most revealing figures came from Denton County.

In the county that makes up the largest portion of Gill’s district, the Republican congressman received approximately 51.2% of the vote and defeated his Democratic opponent by roughly 3.6 percentage points.

That performance contrasted sharply with the results of other Republicans appearing on the same ballot.

Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton received just 44.89% in Denton County, finishing more than eight points behind Democrat James Talarico.

Gill’s winning margin was therefore more than 11 percentage points better than Paxton’s margin in the county.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott also struggled with Denton County voters.

Abbott received approximately 48.22% of the vote, finishing around two points behind Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa.

Those numbers illustrated the unusual nature of Gill’s victory.

While voters in the area rejected several leading Republican candidates, enough supported Gill to deliver him another term in Congress.

And the broader results across Texas were even more dramatic.

Hinojosa defeated Abbott in the gubernatorial election, receiving approximately 52.8% of the statewide vote compared with 45.7% for the three-term Republican governor.

The outcome brought an end to Abbott’s tenure and delivered Democrats a major statewide victory.

Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Vikki Goodwin defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick with approximately 52% of the vote.

Democrats also captured the attorney general’s office and several other statewide positions.

The results represented a historic shift in Texas politics.

For decades, Republicans had dominated statewide elections, maintaining control of every statewide elected office.

Tuesday’s results brought that longstanding political arrangement to an end.

The last Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas had won in 1988, while the state’s last Democratic governor left office during the 1990s.

Against that backdrop, Gill’s reelection became one of the Republican Party’s notable congressional victories in the state.

The congressman first won his seat in 2024 following the retirement of longtime Republican Rep. Michael Burgess.

Texas’ 26th Congressional District, which includes portions of Denton, Cooke and Wise counties, has historically favored Republicans, per Trending Politics.

Recent presidential elections had delivered double-digit Republican victories in the district.

However, the political landscape changed considerably in 2026.

Gill’s margin was narrower than during his initial election, reflecting the broader movement toward Democratic candidates.

Nevertheless, he retained majority support in his district and secured a second term.

The contrast between Gill’s performance and the statewide Republican ticket raises questions about why some voters were willing to support him while rejecting other members of his party.

The election results alone do not establish what motivated those differences.

But the figures make clear that Gill’s support held up better than that of several prominent Republican candidates in the same region.

His victory also comes as Republicans prepare to enter the next Congress without their House majority.

With Democrats securing substantial gains nationally, the GOP faces a difficult period of rebuilding following the November 3 elections.

For Gill, however, Tuesday delivered a different outcome.

While longtime Republican officials across Texas lost their seats, the freshman congressman managed to preserve his.

And in a state that experienced one of its most significant Democratic breakthroughs in decades, Gill emerged with a reelection victory that stood apart from the broader Republican losses.
