A Muskogee County courtroom fell into stunned silence Friday, July 17, as a jury returned guilty verdicts against Cherie Walker on all seven charges she faced. Within moments, jurors recommended the harshest possible outcome: life in prison on every single count.
Walker now awaits formal sentencing, a date that has not yet been set by the court. Until then, the recommendation stands as a signal of just how severely the panel viewed her role in the abuse of her own daughter.
Four days of grueling testimony preceded the verdict.
Paramedics, police officers, doctors, caseworkers from the Department of Human Services, members of the family’s church and relatives all took the stand before jurors reached their conclusion.
Those seven counts broke down into one charge of enabling child sexual abuse and six separate counts of child neglect. Jurors found Walker guilty on every one, according to court records reviewed by PEOPLE.
The roots of the case stretch back to August 2025.
That month, authorities discovered that a girl, just 11 years old, had delivered a baby inside her family’s Muskogee residence — with no doctor present and no prenatal care beforehand.
That discovery triggered an investigation that would eventually implicate three adults connected to the child. At the center of it stood Dustin Walker, Cherie’s husband, whom prosecutors accused of sexually abusing the 11-year-old over an extended period.
KJRH reported that prosecutors laid much of the blame for the ongoing abuse at Cherie Walker’s feet, arguing she was aware of what her husband was doing to their daughter yet did nothing to stop it.
Scientific evidence sealed the case against Dustin Walker. DNA testing confirmed he was the father of the baby his own stepdaughter had given birth to, according to reporting from KTUL.
Dustin Walker’s path through the justice system moved faster than his wife’s. He pleaded guilty back on March 26 to sexually abusing a child under the age of 12, along with six counts of child neglect tied to the same case.
A judge handed him a life sentence for the sexual abuse charge alone. News On 6 reported that additional, consecutive prison terms were stacked on top for the neglect convictions, ensuring decades more time regardless of the life sentence.
The human cost of the crime came into sharp focus through the words of Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson, who described the girl’s suffering in stark terms during an earlier interview with News On 6.
“This child is traumatized,” Hutson said. “She’s been through a horrific ordeal. Not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life.”
Neither Dustin nor Cherie Walker stands as the only adult facing consequences tied to the case. Michelle Justus, the child’s grandmother, has also been charged with one count of child neglect stemming from the same abuse.
Justus has denied wrongdoing, entering a not guilty plea to the charge against her. Her trial is set to begin July 23, according to KJRH, placing a third member of the family before a Muskogee County jury.
Between the two completed prosecutions, both adults directly responsible for the abuse — the man who fathered the child’s baby and the mother accused of shielding him — now face the likelihood of dying in prison.
Sentencing hearings, court testimony and the pending trial of Justus mean the case is far from over in the eyes of the Muskogee County justice system, even as the central convictions have already been secured.
