Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., has been arrested by federal authorities following the discovery of suspected child sexual abuse material in storage units connected to the 82-year-old former Hollywood lighting director.
The arrest took place Friday morning at a senior living facility in Lakeland, Florida, where Markle had been residing after returning to the United States.
According to the Daily Mail, FBI agents arrived at the Maravida Senior Living facility shortly after 9 a.m. and took Markle into custody.
He was subsequently charged with one count of possession of child pornography.
The development marks a dramatic escalation in an international investigation involving alleged discoveries of disturbing material at properties connected to Markle in the United States, Mexico and the Philippines.
Following his arrest, Markle appeared in federal court Friday afternoon, where a judge reviewed the allegations against him.
He did not enter a plea during the hearing.
Despite the seriousness of the charge, Markle was released on bond and ordered to remain under house arrest at his Florida care facility.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and Markle has denied wrongdoing.
The investigation reportedly intensified after authorities uncovered suspected child sexual abuse material inside two Los Angeles storage units Markle had rented for nearly two decades.
According to federal court documents described by the Daily Mail, investigators seized approximately 78 items from the units, including photographic negatives, slides and books containing suspected illegal material.
Some of the photographs allegedly appeared to show Markle participating in the sexual abuse of underage girls.
The criminal complaint reportedly identifies Markle in two of the images.
The materials were believed to be decades old, with investigators examining whether some were connected to a motel in the Philippines.
During Friday’s court hearing, Judge Lindsay Griffin summarized the allegations and asked Markle whether he understood them.
He reportedly answered yes.
The arrest comes after the Daily Mail alerted federal authorities to suspected child sexual abuse material discovered in another storage unit Markle had rented near his former home in Rosarito, Mexico.
Mexican authorities subsequently searched that property, reportedly seizing electronic devices, storage media and other materials as part of their investigation.
According to the report, the search followed a warrant authorizing investigators to look for evidence of child sexual abuse material and possible aggravated human trafficking.
The investigation has also extended to the Philippines, where Markle previously lived.
His son, Thomas Markle Jr., reportedly discovered suspected abusive material among possessions at their former residence in Cebu.
Authorities in the Philippines have been examining electronic devices allegedly containing explicit material involving minors.
No additional criminal charges in those countries were confirmed in Friday’s account.
FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the federal investigation in a statement following Markle’s arrest.
“Working with our Justice Department partners, our agents moved quickly, identified and located the explicit material, and arrested Mr Markle in Florida,” Patel said.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli also emphasized the seriousness of the allegations.
“These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr Markle to the fullest extent of federal law,” he declared.
Markle, however, has repeatedly rejected accusations that he possessed or participated in illegal sexual material involving children.
When questioned by a Daily Mail reporter outside his Florida residence, he denied being a pedophile.
He previously disputed claims concerning the storage unit in Mexico and characterized allegations emerging from the Philippines as fabricated.
The former television lighting director has faced significant health challenges in recent years.
According to the report, he underwent a leg amputation while living in the Philippines and now uses a wheelchair, per the Daily Mail.
He had relocated to the Florida senior living facility earlier this year.
The allegations have also placed renewed attention on his estranged relationship with his daughter, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan previously expressed distress over reports concerning her father and said her thoughts were with children who might have been harmed.
Following Friday’s developments, a close friend of the Duchess told The Sun that Meghan hoped a complete investigation would help deliver justice for any victims.
The latest arrest represents a significant development in a case that has reportedly drawn the attention of law enforcement agencies across multiple countries.
However, investigators have not publicly established the full circumstances surrounding the seized materials, and Markle has not been convicted of the federal charge.
For now, the 82-year-old remains under house arrest as the criminal proceedings move forward.
What began with allegations surrounding possessions stored overseas has now resulted in a federal prosecution involving the estranged father of one of the world’s most recognizable royal figures.
