A deadly shooting erupted at a Citibank corporate campus outside Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday afternoon, leaving a woman dead and four others injured after a gunman crashed through a security fence and opened fire near employees eating lunch.
The horrifying incident unfolded at the Sabal Business Center in Brandon, triggering a massive law enforcement response as authorities rushed to secure the sprawling office complex.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect drove a gray vehicle onto the property, crossed several grassy areas and medians, and eventually smashed through a secured fence.
The vehicle then crashed into an outdoor seating area where several people were having lunch.
What happened next turned an ordinary workday into a deadly emergency.
Authorities said the suspect climbed out of his vehicle carrying a rifle and approached a woman before shooting her.
“Upon the car coming to rest, the suspect exits the vehicle with a rifle, approaches the female, and she is shot,” Chief Deputy Frank Losatt explained during a press conference.
The woman died from her injuries.
Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that she was believed to be employed by a vendor operating at the Citibank facility.
Four additional people were injured during the attack and transported to a nearby hospital.
Authorities said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
But the attack came to an end when an armed Citibank security guard confronted the shooter.
According to Losatt, the security officer opened fire on the suspect, striking him and stopping the immediate threat.
The gunman was subsequently transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
“The suspect was shot, transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he is deceased,” Losatt confirmed.
The shooting left two people dead in total, including the gunman, and four others injured.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister described the violence as a “targeted incident,” although authorities had not publicly disclosed what motivated the attacker.
Investigators also had not established whether the woman who was killed was specifically targeted or whether other individuals were intended victims.
Video circulating from the scene reportedly showed the suspect exiting his damaged vehicle while carrying what appeared to be an AR-style rifle.
The footage captured part of the chaotic sequence that unfolded outside the corporate facility.
Following the shooting, law enforcement launched an extensive operation to secure the property.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office dispatched hundreds of deputies, with a total of 367 personnel responding alongside specialized units.
SWAT officers conducted room-by-room searches throughout the building as employees were evacuated.
Aerial footage showed authorities moving through the enormous business complex while emergency responders assisted injured victims.
Employees were directed to a designated reunification location in a nearby parking lot.
The shooting also disrupted activity at Hillsborough College, where students and employees were instructed to shelter in place because of the heavy police presence.
Authorities urged the public to avoid the surrounding roads while emergency crews continued their work.
“Please avoid the area of Queens Palm Drive and Falkenburg Road until further notice,” the sheriff’s office announced.
The scale of the incident was particularly significant because of the size of Citi’s operations in the Tampa region.
The financial services company employs more than 10,000 people across the area, including workers at the approximately 670,000-square-foot corporate campus where the shooting occurred.
The location houses employees involved in global banking, technology, legal affairs, compliance, risk management and human resources.
A Citi spokesperson acknowledged the emergency in a statement.
The company said it was “aware of an incident impacting our site in Tampa, Florida” and was coordinating with law enforcement.
The shooting raised immediate questions about how the suspect breached the secured property and what circumstances led to the attack.
Investigators have not publicly identified the gunman or announced a definitive motive.
However, the confrontation with the armed security guard proved crucial in bringing the violence to an end.
What began with a vehicle crashing through a corporate security perimeter quickly escalated into gunfire, leaving employees scrambling for safety as authorities descended on the scene, per the New York Post.
For the victims and their families, the consequences were devastating.
One woman lost her life, four other people were injured, and an ordinary Wednesday afternoon at a major Florida business complex became the scene of a deadly shooting.
As investigators work to determine why the attack occurred, the actions of the security guard remain a central part of the unfolding account of how the gunman was stopped.
