Trump Sets Records Straight Amid Multiple Reports That He’s Unhappy With Certain WH Official

“The only one that matters is me because I’m the one that makes the decision.” President Donald Trump delivered that line to reporters Friday as he addressed questions about who will run his West Wing.

The questions centered on Susie Wiles, his White House chief of staff.

A day earlier, Politico Playbook had reported that Trump was weighing her replacement. Over the next two days, the president publicly rejected that account.

Reporters asked him Friday whether he was considering a change.

He gave a two-word reply: “Zero chance.” He described the report as false and said Wiles will remain in the administration “for a long time.”

Politico Playbook built its Thursday story on four people with direct knowledge of the conversations. According to the outlet, Trump privately sought opinions from allies about Wiles and discussed who might succeed her.

The outlet named five possible replacements: Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy; Randy Levine, president of the New York Yankees; former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy; special envoy Steve Witkoff; and Bill Pulte.

Politico also reported that Wiles’ rivals, along with other figures who believe she has sidelined them, have encouraged Trump to consider a change.

The report said they have passed around unfavorable coverage of Wiles and her family.

Trump answered first on Thursday, in capital letters. He called the story “TOTAL FAKE NEWS” and said Wiles retained his “COMPLETE confidence.”

The sequence moved quickly. Politico published Thursday, Trump issued his statement the same day, and he took questions from reporters Friday.

Friday brought a longer defense of his chief of staff.

“The Susie Wiles story was a fake story. She’s been incredible. We’ve had, maybe, the most successful two years—and it’s not even two years—in the history of the presidency,” he said.

He then spoke about her health.

“She’s smart, she’s tough, she just went through a lot with the cancer surgery and the whole thing, and she recovered, fully recovered. She’s phenomenal.”

Wiles announced in September that she had fully recovered. She thanked her family, her doctors, and Trump for supporting her during her treatment.

Trump also took aim at how Politico handled the story.

He said the outlet published it even though the White House had explicitly denied its central claim before publication. He added that Wiles would stay at the White House.

Semafor examined the question as well. Nearly a dozen Trump advisers and administration officials told the outlet they doubt the president intends to remove her.

One administration official called the speculation “absurd.” A Trump adviser said people hoping to position themselves for Wiles’ job are promoting the rumors.

Wiles has been among Trump’s most important political advisers for years, and she played a central role in managing his 2024 presidential campaign.

After he defeated Kamala Harris, he picked her as chief of staff. She became the first woman in American history to hold the position.

Trump’s first term moved through the job at a different pace.

Reince Priebus, John Kelly, Mick Mulvaney and Mark Meadows each served as chief of staff or acting chief of staff.

Inside the building, Wiles has pushed for greater organizational discipline in the second Trump White House.

She has largely stayed out of the television spotlight that many other senior administration officials occupy.

The report landed as Republicans prepare for the November 3 midterm elections. Trump has increasingly focused on protecting the GOP’s congressional majorities.

Another personnel story broke the same week. Press secretary Katie Zacharia left her post Friday after only days on the job.
