A GoFundMe campaign quietly appeared online this week, asking strangers to help a Southwest Florida mother pay for a defense attorney.
Within it lies one of the more unusual criminal cases to surface from Charlotte County in recent memory.
Deputies arrested Malia Nummerdor, 38, on September 15 after her estranged husband handed investigators security footage he says he captured inside their shared home.
Erik Nummerdor first went public with his accusations on Facebook before law enforcement got involved, according to charging paperwork later filed by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
The mother of two sons now carries a single charge: sexual contact with an animal.
Court records trace the origin of the case back to a household mystery that had nothing to do with the eventual allegation.
Erik told deputies he had mounted two cameras inside the residence months earlier, hoping to catch whoever kept raiding a jar of loose change.
Every member of the household reportedly knew the devices were running, he said.
That surveillance effort took an unexpected turn when Erik reviewed footage from a bedroom camera.
He told investigators the recording appeared to show Malia engaged in a sex act involving the family’s dog, a pet named Ranger.
Investigators did not rely solely on Erik’s word.
He surrendered both the recording and the laptop storing it, giving police what they described as an independent source of corroboration beyond Erik’s statements.
Malia sat for a police interview the same day she was booked. Officers noted she appeared impaired during questioning and told them she had been drinking or using drugs beforehand.
Her account of events, as recorded in the arrest report, pushed back hard against the accusation.
Police wrote that when asked to explain the dog’s proximity to her genital area, Nummerdor denied sexual conduct and claimed she had merely been lying with and petting her elderly dog near its bed.
Detectives said her explanation grew shakier under further questioning.
The report states that when asked to clarify her physical position and the dog’s placement between her legs, Nummerdor was unable to provide any coherent or consistent explanation.
She reportedly pointed detectives toward a second dog also present in the bedroom that night.
Booking photos taken at the Charlotte County Jail show Malia smiling broadly. She was released from custody a short time later, and no additional charges have been announced.
Outside the courtroom, a different fight has begun.
A fundraiser posted Monday paints Malia as the true victim of the saga, describing her marriage to Erik as having collapsed into something vengeful and destructive.
The campaign’s organizers wrote that Malia’s lives — along with her sons’ — have been turned upside down following a painful and difficult situation involving Malia’s estranged husband and allegations against her that she maintains are untrue.
They say the family has since been forced out of their home.
Malia has no living parents and grew up without siblings, according to the fundraiser, leaving a circle of friends to step in during the crisis.
Organizers stressed that Malia is facing serious allegations, and she needs experienced legal representation to ensure that she has the opportunity to fully address them through the proper legal process, adding that her sons deserve privacy, stability, and as much normalcy as possible while the adults involved work through what comes next.
The page’s authors were careful to separate fundraising from any verdict on guilt.
They wrote plainly that this fundraiser is not asking anyone to decide the facts of the case, framing it instead as an effort to get a mother and her children through an extraordinarily difficult period and ensure Malia has access to appropriate legal representation.
So far, public generosity has lagged far behind the campaign’s ambitions. Only two donations had come in during the fundraiser’s first full day online, both under $20 apiece.
Malia’s social media history offers a glimpse into the family life now under scrutiny, with years of photos showing her alongside Erik, whom she married in 2023, and their two sons.
Erik has not responded to requests for comment since the allegations became public.
The criminal case remains pending as Charlotte County prosecutors weigh next steps, leaving both the courtroom outcome and the fundraiser’s fate unresolved for now.
