Cenk Uygur suffered an awkward on-air mishap Thursday when his chair suddenly collapsed beneath him in the middle of a contentious debate over Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
The Young Turks founder was appearing on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” when the discussion erupted into a shouting match involving El-Sayed, Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers and progressive streamer Hasan Piker.
The moment quickly spread across social media after Uygur suddenly dropped several inches while arguing with the panel.
The confrontation began after host Piers Morgan brought up a CBS News report concerning old social media posts from El-Sayed that were later deleted.
Among the posts highlighted by CBS were remarks in which El-Sayed drew a comparison between the number of Americans killed by COVID-19 and the nearly 3,000 people murdered during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The conversation soon expanded to include Piker, Uygur’s nephew and a prominent left-wing streamer who has faced repeated criticism over inflammatory political statements.
Uygur pushed back against the criticism of El-Sayed, arguing that the candidate had removed all of his posts from before 2023 rather than selectively deleting controversial material uncovered by reporters.
He also accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of unfairly targeting El-Sayed because of his Muslim faith.
The debate became even more contentious when Uygur shifted his attention toward Rogers, El-Sayed’s Republican opponent in the Michigan Senate race.
Uygur claimed Rogers had effectively “worked for Israel” for two decades and questioned why the Republican was not being pressed to condemn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
During the exchange, Uygur described himself as an “unsanctioned surrogate” for El-Sayed while continuing to defend the Democratic candidate.
Republican strategist Ronna McDaniel then brought the discussion back to Piker, pointing to previous occasions in which the streamer had said he hated America.
That immediately drew another angry response from Uygur.
“We love America! We love America so much we want to represent America instead of Israel,” Uygur fired back.
The panel quickly descended into cross-talk as McDaniel and Uygur attempted to speak over one another while Morgan struggled to move the discussion forward.
Morgan eventually announced that he wanted to play a compilation of Piker repeatedly declaring “I hate America” during his livestreams.
The timing proved disastrous for Uygur.
As Morgan prepared to show the footage, Uygur began protesting the renewed focus on his nephew.
“Oh here we go, here we go back to Hasan —” he said.
Before Uygur could finish his thought, his chair abruptly collapsed, causing him to sink downward on camera in the middle of the argument.
For several moments, the rest of the panel continued debating as Uygur looked underneath himself and tried to determine what had happened.
“What the f*ck is this?” Uygur exclaimed before laughing at the situation.
The commentator quickly recovered and continued participating in the discussion, but the unexpected chair malfunction became one of the most memorable moments of an already chaotic segment.
The political dispute behind the exchange centers on Michigan’s open Senate seat, where El-Sayed is facing Rogers in a race attracting significant national attention.
El-Sayed has faced scrutiny over previous political statements and his relationship with Piker, while Republicans have increasingly highlighted Piker’s past rhetoric as they seek to tie the streamer to the Democratic nominee, per Trending Politics.
Uygur’s appearance was intended to defend El-Sayed against those attacks, but his argument with McDaniel rapidly expanded into a broader fight over Israel, American politics and Piker’s inflammatory commentary.
By the end of the segment, however, the policy fight had competition for viewers’ attention after Uygur’s chair unexpectedly gave way at precisely one of the loudest moments of the debate.
