House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is planning to meet privately with Elon Musk in Texas as Republicans look to the billionaire for a potentially massive financial boost ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Johnson is expected to meet with Musk on Friday while the speaker campaigns for Republican candidates across Texas, according to four people familiar with the plans who spoke with Politico. The meeting could still change because Musk’s schedule remains fluid, the sources cautioned.
The sit-down comes as Musk weighs pouring at least $100 million into Republican efforts through America PAC, potentially providing crucial financial support to GOP candidates fighting to preserve the party’s congressional majorities.
Some Republicans believe a portion of Musk’s money could be directed specifically toward competitive House races, according to Politico.
“Battleground Republicans need Elon’s support and they will always be happy to take a meeting with him,” one person familiar with the planned meeting told the outlet.
A spokesperson for America PAC declined to comment on the meeting or Musk’s potential spending plans, while Johnson’s office did not immediately respond to Politico.
The potential nine-figure investment would add to an already formidable Republican financial operation heading into the final stretch before Election Day.
President Donald Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC currently has more than $400 million available, according to Politico, with its leaders indicating that the money will be deployed during the fall campaign.
Musk has already demonstrated his willingness to spend enormous sums influencing American elections.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO spent roughly $290 million supporting Trump and other Republicans during the 2024 election cycle, primarily through America PAC. That spending made him the largest individual donor to political committees during the cycle, according to Politico.
His involvement with Republicans did not end after Trump returned to the White House.
Musk took a prominent role in the Trump administration through the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which focused on cutting government spending and reducing the federal workforce.
His relationship with Trump later deteriorated dramatically as Musk publicly attacked Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Musk and Trump traded increasingly personal attacks during the dispute, while the billionaire briefly floated the possibility of forming a new political party.
The relationship has since improved, and Musk has again been moving closer to Trump and the Republican Party.
As Trending Politics previously reported, Musk began signaling plans late last year for a major financial push benefiting Republican candidates in the 2026 midterms after his relationship with the administration improved.
Musk has already directed millions of dollars toward several major Republican political organizations.
He contributed roughly $5 million each to the Congressional Leadership Fund and Senate Leadership Fund late last year, according to Politico. The organizations are two of the most important outside groups working to maintain Republican control of Congress, per Politico.
Musk also gave another $5 million to MAGA Inc.
His political spending has extended into individual races as well.
Musk contributed $10 million to a super PAC supporting Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Nate Morris during the state’s GOP primary and another $5 million to V-PAC, which backed former DOGE co-leader Vivek Ramaswamy’s gubernatorial campaign in Ohio.
His potential return as a major Republican benefactor also comes as congressional Republicans attempt to revive elements of the DOGE agenda.
Trending Politics recently reported that Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), after being tapped to lead a DOGE-focused House subcommittee, publicly called on Musk to become involved again.
“I hope Elon Musk will get reengaged with us,” Burchett said. “And I look forward to working with him, as I did in the past.”
Johnson’s planned Texas meeting now provides another indication that Republican leaders are interested in keeping Musk closely connected to the party.
The stakes are particularly high for the House speaker.
Republicans are defending a narrow House majority, meaning a relatively small number of competitive districts could determine which party controls the chamber next year.
Musk’s resources could therefore have an outsized impact if America PAC directs a significant portion of its potential $100 million spending operation toward vulnerable House Republicans.
Exactly how much Musk ultimately intends to spend — and which candidates or organizations will receive the money — remains unclear.
Friday’s planned meeting with Johnson, however, comes as GOP leaders increasingly look toward one of the party’s biggest financial supporters from 2024 for help securing another Republican victory in November.
