Red State Gifts Muslims Public ‘Foot Wash’ Stations

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is moving forward with plans to install dedicated Islamic ablution stations inside Terminal D restrooms, drawing criticism from some conservatives who have questioned the religious accommodation at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

The project was registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on July 31 and calls for Wudu washing facilities to be installed in existing men’s and women’s restrooms.

“Project consists of adding Ablution stations to existing concourse level restrooms in Terminal D, one Men’s ablution station in existing men’s restroom and one Women’s ablution station in the existing women’s restroom,” the project description states.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

According to the state filing cited in the report, the privately funded project is expected to cost approximately $300,000.

Wudu is an Islamic ritual involving the washing of parts of the body before prayer. The practice typically includes washing the hands, mouth, nose, face, arms, head and feet.

Dedicated ablution stations generally provide low-level fixtures that make it easier for travelers to perform the washing without placing their feet inside conventional restroom sinks.

News of the project quickly generated criticism online, particularly among some conservatives who questioned why an airport in Texas was installing facilities specifically designed to accommodate an Islamic religious practice.

Others, however, argued that the project is primarily a practical facilities and safety measure rather than an endorsement of Islam.

Conservative activist Ryan Fournier was among those urging people to consider the practical reasons behind the project.

“People are freaking out over foot-washing stations at DFW, but let’s look at the actual facts before jumping to conclusions,” Fournier wrote on social media. “This isn’t about pushing an ideology — it’s basic airport management.”

Supporters of dedicated ablution stations argue that Muslim travelers may otherwise attempt to wash their feet using conventional restroom sinks.

Doing so can result in water spilling onto restroom floors and counters, potentially creating maintenance problems and slipping hazards.

“Safety & Plumbing: People washing their feet in standard bathroom sinks creates soaked, slippery floors and breaks the counters,” Fournier wrote. “Low-level wudu basins keep the restrooms dry and safe for everyone.”

Dallas-Fort Worth is a major international travel hub serving passengers from around the world.

Dedicated ablution facilities are also not unique to DFW. Similar accommodations and interfaith facilities have been available at other major US airports, according to the report.

“Standard Infrastructure: DFW is one of the busiest travel hubs on the planet,” Fournier wrote. “Major U.S. airports like Chicago O’Hare and Indianapolis have had these and interfaith rooms for years to handle international traffic cleanly.”

The distinction has not stopped the project from generating controversy.

Some critics have characterized the facilities as preferential treatment for one religion and questioned whether public-facing institutions should construct infrastructure specifically accommodating religious practices.

Supporters counter that the stations address an existing practical issue and allow travelers who perform Wudu to do so without using conventional sinks.

The project is also privately funded, according to the state filings cited in the report.

Fournier characterized the issue as straightforward facilities management, as Trending Politics reported.

“It’s just about keeping the bathrooms clean and preventing people from slipping on wet tiles,” he wrote. “Plain and simple.”

The new facilities are expected to be completed before the end of 2026, making DFW the latest major US airport to provide dedicated ablution stations for Muslim travelers.
