Karmelo Anthony Gets Good News

A Texas courtroom will become the center of intense legal drama next month as attorneys for a convicted killer launch a two-pronged assault on his own murder conviction.

Karmelo Anthony, now serving a 35-year sentence for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, returns to court on August 19 and 20 for hearings that could determine whether his conviction survives at all.

The killing took place in April 2025 at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, where a disagreement over seating spiraled into deadly violence.

Jurors ultimately convicted Anthony of first-degree murder last month after hearing testimony describing how he plunged a knife into Metcalf’s chest during the confrontation.

That conviction is now squarely in the crosshairs of a newly assembled legal team determined to dismantle it piece by piece.

The opening salvo comes August 19, when defense lawyers will ask the court to strip State District Judge John Roach Jr. of any further authority over the case.

Their argument hinges on remarks Roach allegedly made once the trial had already wrapped, comments the defense says reveal a judge who had already picked a side.

Court documents filed by Anthony’s attorneys state that Roach “expressed personal opinions about the propriety and correctness of the jury’s verdict, the fairness of the trial and the correctness of the judge’s own rulings during the trial.”

The controversy traces back to a moment when a journalist pressed Roach on whether jurors had gotten the verdict right. His answer was blunt: “Yeah, they did.” He then kept talking about how the case had played out.

Defense attorneys argue those words disqualify him from overseeing what comes next.

One day later, on August 20, the legal battle shifts to a far more consequential question: whether Anthony deserves an entirely new trial.

NBC-DFW reports that Anthony’s attorneys plan to lay out a list of alleged missteps from the original proceedings during that hearing.

Among their complaints, the defense says certain portions of the trial were shielded from public view, raising transparency concerns.

They further allege prosecutors broke an off-the-record understanding that had been struck during the case, though the exact nature of that arrangement remains unclear.

The defense also insists that the instructions given to jurors were written in a way that made it nearly impossible for them to properly weigh Anthony’s self-defense argument.

Adding another layer to the unfolding saga, a judge recently ordered that security footage and police body camera video used as trial evidence be made public.

Behind the scenes, the makeup of Anthony’s legal team has already shifted dramatically. A group of civil rights attorneys stepped in back in June to lead the appeals fight.

Their involvement has only intensified the spotlight on a case that was already generating fierce national debate.

Much of that debate has centered on race, with certain activists framing the case through that lens given the different racial backgrounds of Anthony and Metcalf.

That framing extended into the courtroom itself, where Anthony’s supporters at one point pushed a narrative that no black jurors had been seated on the panel.

That narrative fell apart under scrutiny, as records confirmed multiple minority jurors actually served during the trial.

With both hearings now on the calendar, legal observers expect the recusal fight and the new-trial request to draw heavy attention from media outlets and the public alike.

Should the defense succeed in removing Judge Roach, the case could land before an entirely different jurist for whatever comes next.

For now, the 35-year sentence remains intact, but the coming weeks will test whether it stays that way.
