A Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail is under investigation over allegations that the agent compromised sensitive operational information, the agency confirmed.
Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications, said the agent is the subject of an administrative investigation and could also face a criminal inquiry.
“A member of the Vice Presidential Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation, and potential criminal inquiry, involving allegations of compromising operational and information security,” Guglielmi said in a statement to Fox News.
The agency has not publicly identified the agent or disclosed what information was allegedly compromised.
Guglielmi said the Secret Service would not tolerate conduct that could place a protected official at risk.
“Any conduct that potentially threatens the safety of a protectee will not be tolerated,” he said.
The investigation was disclosed days after MS Now published a report describing alleged frustration among agents assigned to Vance’s detail over last-minute personal and family travel requests.
According to that report, agents have faced difficulty preparing for trips that are arranged with limited notice and treated as “off-the-record,” or OTR, movements.
The outlet later reported that Vance’s office canceled a proposed helicopter trip connected to a golf lesson for one of the vice president’s children.
The Trump administration said the proposed use of Marine Two was based on security and logistical considerations rather than personal convenience.
“Compared to a motorcade, it drastically decreased the burden on local law enforcement and eliminated the inconvenience of road closures and disruptions to motorists along the long driving route,” the administration said in a statement to Fox News.
Current and former agents cited by MS Now reportedly said previous vice presidents generally avoided using government transportation for their children’s personal activities.
One person familiar with concerns inside the detail said agents had become frustrated with short-notice travel requests.
“The detail is tired of them not giving notice on things and making everything an OTR,” the person said, according to the report.
A spokesperson for Vance defended the vice president and praised the Secret Service agents assigned to protect him and his family.
“While protecting a vice president with a large policy portfolio and a young and growing family presents a unique challenge, agents of the Secret Service do so with excellence every day,” the spokesperson said.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn also defended the agency’s personnel and said agents understand that protective assignments require flexibility and constant readiness.
“Our agents work tirelessly to ensure protectees’ safety and security, while also preserving normalcy to the extent possible,” Quinn said. “There is no room for compromise.”
The MS Now report also said some agents created challenge coins and stickers referring to Vance’s Secret Service code name, “Bobcat,” and the frequency of last-minute travel requests. Some reportedly included the phrase “Bobcat OTR Survivors Club.”
The Trump administration said Vance’s young family and diplomatic responsibilities have created demands that differ from those faced by many previous vice presidents.
