A profanity directed at New York City’s mayor has thrust progressive streamer Hasan Piker into the spotlight this week.
Piker unleashed the remark while sitting down with Zeteo founder Mehdi Hasan for the podcast “We’re Not Kidding,” recorded in Washington, D.C. and released Wednesday.
At the center of the outburst sat a New York Times interview with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in which a reporter posed a hypothetical question about unlimited funding.
Piker described the exchange to Hasan before reacting sharply on the air.
“I just listened to his new New York Times conversation where The New York Times asked him, like, ‘If you had unlimited money, what would you do?’” Piker said.
Mamdani’s answer, according to Piker, offered nothing new.
“He’s like, ‘Exactly the same policies I’m implementing.’ I’m like, ‘Shut the f— up, dude,’” Piker said.
That single line surfaced from a much longer exchange between the two hosts, one centered on messaging tactics inside progressive politics.
Hasan and Piker debated whether left-leaning officials worry too much about how their positions will be received publicly, and whether that worry causes them to soften their stances.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., became a focal point of Piker’s analysis midway through the discussion.
Piker argued that any trace of hesitation or defensiveness from a politician can erode public confidence in their convictions.
“If you come across as, like, even a little worried or even a little defensive, then people respond to that with, ‘Oh, maybe she doesn’t believe this either,’” Piker said.
He did not stop there, extending his assessment of Ocasio-Cortez’s public presentation.
“The way she carries herself, I think, is a little bit too, like, optics-driven, too liberal and too optics-driven,” Piker said.
Fox News Digital sought comment from both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez following the podcast’s release. Neither had responded by publication time.
Mamdani fared better in the comparison Piker drew next, earning praise for his ability to speak to multiple political audiences at once.
Piker singled out Mamdani’s communication style as a model for blending progressive substance with broader appeal.
“I think Zohran has done a pretty good job of merging those two worlds where he speaks the language of liberalism,” Piker said.
Hasan then turned the conversation back on his guest, asking directly whether Piker meant to end the interview by telling a fellow progressive to curse off.
Piker pushed back on any suggestion of a falling-out with the mayor, framing his comment as frustration rather than opposition.
“I mean, come on,” Piker said. “I love the guy. I have my disagreements with him from time to time.”
By the interview’s close, Piker had agreed to an alternate framing Hasan offered for the point he had been trying to make about progressive messaging.
The episode has circulated widely since its release, drawing attention to internal debates over strategy within the progressive movement.
Piker has amassed a substantial following through political streaming on Twitch, where he regularly weighs in on national politics.
Mamdani took office as New York City’s mayor after campaigning on a progressive policy platform that drew significant national coverage.
Ocasio-Cortez continues to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District and remains one of the most recognizable figures within the Democratic Party’s left flank.
Central to Piker’s argument was the idea that visible caution from elected officials can undercut the very policies they champion.
He suggested that voters read hesitation as a lack of genuine belief in a stated position.
As of publication, representatives for neither Mamdani nor Ocasio-Cortez had issued a statement addressing Piker’s comments.

Online reaction to the exchange continued to build in the hours following the episode’s release, with the comment quickly spreading across social media.
