The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is preparing to unveil an updated political platform that includes proposals to significantly change the structure of the federal government, according to Fox News.
According to a source familiar with the organization’s planning, the platform update is expected to expand on the DSA’s existing policy agenda, which includes ending deportations, allowing broader immigration access, extending voting rights to noncitizens and people with criminal convictions, and creating what the group describes as a “new democratic constitution.”
The organization has described itself as a “working-class alternative to the Democratic Party.”
The reported proposals have drawn attention as the DSA has gained influence through a series of electoral victories involving candidates aligned with the organization’s socialist platform.
The group has endorsed prominent progressive figures, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose political rise has helped increase national attention on democratic socialism.
The DSA’s growing influence has also fueled debate over the direction of the Democratic Party.
The organization has celebrated recent primary victories by candidates it supports, arguing that socialism offers an alternative to what it describes as decades of economic inequality and political failures.
Critics, including some Republicans, argue that the movement represents a shift away from traditional Democratic policies toward a more radical restructuring of government institutions.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recently pointed to the rise of candidates aligned with Mamdani and other democratic socialists as part of a broader political trend.
During a Fox News Sunday interview, Johnson said “there are many Mamdanis popping up” across the country and described democratic socialism as “a serious threat to our whole system of government.”
Johnson’s remarks reflected Republican concerns that the movement’s growing influence could reshape the political landscape, while supporters of democratic socialism argue they are advocating for greater economic and political representation.
Among the most significant proposals reported in the upcoming platform is the elimination of the Senate and a restructuring of the nation’s separation of powers.
Fox News reported that the plan would replace the current executive and judicial branches with institutions chosen by Congress, a move critics say would fundamentally alter the Constitution’s system of checks and balances.
The reported platform builds on other long-standing DSA priorities, including Medicare for All, canceling student loan debt, universal rent control, eliminating cash bail, and establishing a 32-hour workweek without reducing pay or benefits.
The group’s 2025–2026 program also calls for proportional representation and a new federal structure it says would expand democratic rights.
The organization’s rise has generated debate among lawmakers from both parties.
Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) has criticized some far-left candidates gaining attention in Democratic primaries, arguing that some individuals associated with the movement hold views outside the mainstream Democratic Party, according to TNND.
Supporters of the DSA, however, maintain that the organization represents a working-class movement seeking major policy changes.
As the DSA prepares to release its updated platform, the debate surrounding democratic socialism’s role in American politics is expected to intensify.
