President Donald Trump said Wednesday that a previously undisclosed U.S. military operation helped escort commercial vessels carrying more than 100 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that has remained a focal point of tensions between the United States and Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the effort as a “secret mission” authorized last month to support commercial shipping and energy transportation through the narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets.
According to Trump, more than 200 commercial ships safely transited the strait during the operation.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that this effort has resulted in more than 100 million barrels of oil making its way through the Strait, and into the open market,” Trump wrote.
The president did not provide details about the military assets involved, the duration of the operation, or the specific companies whose vessels were escorted. The White House also did not immediately release additional information regarding the mission.
The announcement comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities. While a ceasefire has largely limited direct military confrontations, U.S. officials have continued to express concern about threats to commercial shipping and freedom of navigation in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. Roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments pass through the narrow waterway, making its security a key concern for international energy markets.
For decades, Iran has periodically threatened to restrict traffic through the strait during periods of heightened tensions with the United States and its allies. Previous incidents in the region have included vessel seizures, naval confrontations and attacks on commercial shipping, according to the Conservative Brief.
Trump characterized the operation as evidence of U.S. military strength and emphasized America’s role in maintaining open access to the waterway.
The president also asserted that Iran does not control the strait, arguing that U.S. military actions helped ensure uninterrupted commercial traffic despite ongoing regional instability.
Energy analysts noted that the figure cited by Trump — 100 million barrels of oil — is roughly equivalent to average global oil consumption over several days and represents a substantial volume of international energy trade.
Oil prices have eased in recent days after earlier surging amid concerns about potential disruptions to shipping and energy supplies during the regional conflict.
