Elderly Couple Found Dead After Desperate Calls Go Unanswered

Family members raised the alarm when they couldn’t get Billy and Virginia Carol Blair on the phone. What deputies discovered when they arrived at the Mendenhall home would shake their community to its core.

Billy Blair, 74, and his 71-year-old wife Virginia Carol were already dead. A teenager was still inside — and he was armed.

Simpson County Sheriff’s Office deputies had been dispatched to the Blair residence at 12:24 p.m. on June 3 in response to the family’s welfare concern. The moment they approached the property, gunfire erupted in their direction.

The shooter wasn’t just targeting law enforcement. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin confirmed that both deputies and civilians in the immediate vicinity found themselves trapped, unable to move without drawing fire.

Martin identified the situation as an active burglary when the first responders arrived on scene.

Cordarius Hobbs, 17, was the man behind the gun. According to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, Hobbs made direct contact with officers during the standoff and promised to walk out the front door and turn himself in.

He had no intention of keeping that promise.

Hobbs bolted out the back of the house instead, sending deputies scrambling in pursuit. During the chase, one deputy was struck by a bullet.

A Mississippi state trooper ultimately fired on Hobbs, wounding him and bringing the violent episode to an end. Hobbs was transported to a medical facility with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Prosecutors wasted no time loading the charge sheet.

Hobbs faces two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and two counts of aggravated assault targeting victims over the age of 65.

The Blair family addressed the public through Facebook, offering words that carried both grief and resolve. “We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted, but we are not alone,” the statement read.

Those who knew the couple personally painted a picture of two people who defined generosity. Jason Busby, a friend of the Blairs, told WLBT that their loss has left the neighborhood struggling to process what happened.

“The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just a tragedy,” Busby said. “Everybody around here is still in shock. They were just good people.”

The couple’s deaths have cast a long shadow over Mendenhall, a small Simpson County community now grappling with the violent end of two of its own.
