Rush Hour Turns Violent as Commuters Caught in Sudden Transit Attack

A man was arrested after opening fire aboard a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train in Midtown Atlanta, leaving one passenger injured and triggering a broader security response across the city’s transit system.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded during the evening rush hour on June 5 at the Midtown station when officers on the platform reported hearing gunfire coming from a stopped train.

The victim suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and leg but survived the attack.

Investigators said the situation quickly escalated into a multi-agency manhunt that ended in Douglas County, where law enforcement located and arrested the suspect, 42-year-old Anthony Tyrone Gresham.

Officials said he was tracked by members of an FBI Atlanta-area task force roughly a day after the shooting and was taken into custody after attempting to flee into wooded terrain when approached by deputies.

He was booked on charges including aggravated assault and multiple firearm-related offenses, according to CBS News.

The incident also prompted an immediate operational response from MARTA and local law enforcement agencies, who increased visible security across the transit network in the days following the shooting.

Police said additional uniformed officers were deployed to trains and station platforms, with some personnel reassigned from administrative duties into active patrol roles.

Transit officials also implemented extended shifts for officers in an effort to maintain increased coverage during peak commuting hours, a move intended to strengthen deterrence and reassure riders amid heightened concern.

Public reaction from commuters reflected a mix of reassurance and unease as riders adjusted to the visible security changes.

Some passengers told FOX 5 Atlanta that the increased police presence offered a greater sense of safety following the shooting, while others described lingering concerns about the unpredictability of violence in crowded public spaces.

Regular commuters noted that while patrols had become more visible in recent days, the incident had still shaken confidence in the system’s overall security.

Witness accounts described a chaotic scene inside the train car as shots were fired, with passengers taking cover and attempting to move away from the source of the gunfire.

Authorities have not confirmed a motive, and investigators have not publicly indicated whether the attack was targeted or random.

The lack of clarity has added to public concern, as officials continue to review evidence and witness statements gathered from the scene.

The shooting has renewed broader scrutiny of MARTA’s security strategy, particularly the balance between visible policing, staffing deployment, and long-term prevention efforts.

Transit officials said they are reviewing existing safety procedures in coordination with law enforcement partners while maintaining that multiple safeguards are in place across the system, including surveillance and platform monitoring.

However, repeated incidents involving transit violence have intensified pressure on the agency to demonstrate more durable improvements in rider safety and response readiness.

As the investigation continues, officials say they are still assessing whether the shooting is connected to any broader pattern of transit-related crime in the Atlanta area.

For now, authorities maintain that the case remains active, with further updates expected as evidence is processed and additional details about the suspect’s actions leading up to the shooting are clarified.
