Sick Report About Tulsi Gabbard Debunked

A family medical emergency brought the tenure of one of Washington’s most closely watched cabinet officials to an unexpected close last week, and the Trump administration is now fighting back hard against a narrative it calls an outright lie.

Tulsi Gabbard walked into the Oval Office on May 22 and personally delivered her resignation to President Donald Trump. The reason had nothing to do with politics.

Her husband, Abraham Williams, has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Gabbard made clear in her resignation letter that no position in government could outweigh her obligation to stand by him.

“He faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months ahead, and I need to be by his side to support him through this difficult time,” she wrote.

Her departure from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence takes effect June 30.

For the past 16 months, Gabbard held one of the most powerful and sensitive roles in the federal government, overseeing the nation’s entire intelligence apparatus.

Trump took to Truth Social to respond, offering high praise for her service and describing her husband’s cancer as the sole reason behind her exit.

The White House made identical representations in public statements that followed.

Then came the pushback from the press.

Reuters published a report the same day that introduced a sharply different version of events.

Buried alongside Gabbard’s own stated explanation was an anonymous source described as familiar with the situation, who alleged she had been forced out by the White House — not pulled away by family crisis.

That source told Reuters the administration had grown dissatisfied with Gabbard over several months.

The grievances cited included operations carried out by her Director’s Initiatives Group task force and tensions over national security policy, specifically matters connected to U.S. dealings with Iran.

Reuters further noted that the White House initially declined to address the forced-out allegation when contacted for comment — a silence that accelerated speculation across social media and drew fierce criticism of the outlet’s reporting.

The administration did not stay quiet for long.

White House spokesperson Davis R. Ingle went directly to X and posted a statement that left no room for interpretation. Invoking the president’s own words, Ingle called the forced-resignation claim what it was.

“Tulsi Gabbard is an America First patriot who has served this country faithfully and extremely well over the last 16 months,” Ingle wrote.

“As the President said, she is stepping aside to ensure that her husband becomes better than ever before. Any suggestion that the White House forced her to resign over her husband’s health is slanderous.”

The word “slanderous” landed hard in a media environment already under pressure over its sourcing practices, and the post circulated rapidly among critics of mainstream press coverage.

Gabbard herself arrived at the role after a notable political journey.

A former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, she ran for her party’s presidential nomination in 2020 before eventually leaving the party and throwing her support behind Trump.

She was confirmed by the Senate and sworn in as DNI in February 2025.

During her time leading the intelligence community, Gabbard pointed to measurable progress on transparency and the integrity of intelligence operations.

She expressed commitment in her resignation letter to leaving the office in strong shape and ensuring a seamless handoff to whoever follows her.

That handoff goes to the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, who brings more than 20 years of experience in the intelligence field.

Lukas assumes the acting DNI role the moment Gabbard’s tenure officially ends.

The transition is set. The White House has made its position plain. And Gabbard, who built a career on taking on powerful institutions, now turns her full attention to her family.
