A widening federal corruption probe has reached one of Virginia’s most powerful legislative offices after FBI agents executed court-authorized search warrants in Portsmouth that extended to both a state Senate office and a neighboring cannabis dispensary, according to multiple officials and reports.
Federal agents carried out the searches inside the Portsmouth office of Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas, working for hours while also moving between the legislative space and the adjacent business.
Fox News reported that Lucas later arrived on scene while the operation was still underway, though officials have not disclosed what prompted the warrants or what evidence investigators were seeking.
The FBI confirmed that agents were executing a “court-authorized search warrant” in Portsmouth and emphasized that there was no threat to public safety.
Officials declined to provide details on the scope of the investigation, whether Lucas is considered a target or witness, or what materials were taken during the operation.
The search drew immediate attention due to Lucas’s senior position in Virginia politics and the presence of federal agents at both a government office and a private cannabis business located next door.
