Springsteen Fans Revolt After What Rocker Just Called America

A sold-out arena in Minneapolis got more than it bargained for Tuesday night when Bruce Springsteen took the stage to open his “Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour” — and kept stopping the music to deliver pointed political speeches aimed squarely at the White House.

The concert, held at the Target Center on March 31, ran for over three hours and featured the E Street Band alongside guitarist Tom Morello, who will accompany Springsteen for every stop on the tour.

Springsteen had told the Minnesota Star Tribune ahead of the opening night that fans should expect politics front and center, describing the upcoming tour as “political and very topical about what’s going on in the country.”

He made good on that promise before the night was over.

The musician paused the show four separate times to address the crowd, repeatedly punctuating his remarks with the phrase, “This is happening now.”

“We are living through some very dark times,” Springsteen told the audience, according to Variety

“Our American values that have sustained us for 250 years are being challenged as never before. We’ve got our young men and women’s lives at risk in an unconstitutional and illegal war. This is happening now.”

He then turned his attention to immigration enforcement, telling the crowd, “There are immigrants being held in detention centers around the country and being deported without due process of law to alien countries and foreign gulags. This is happening now.”

From there, Springsteen directed his remarks at the president himself, stating, “While working Americans struggle, our president and his family enrich themselves by billions of dollars trading on the people’s office in corruption unmatched in American history. This is happening now.”

He closed that portion of his speech by saying, “This White House is destroying the American idea and our reputation around the world. To many, we are no longer looked upon as an often imperfect but strong defender of democracy standing for the global good.”

“We are no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are now, to many, America the reckless, unpredictable, predatory rogue nation. That is this administration’s and this president’s legacy. This is happening now.”

The reaction online was swift and deeply divided.

Anger poured in from fans who felt they had paid premium prices for a music performance, not a political forum. One user on X wrote, “What a [sic] elites self righteous POS. I regret ever buying this lowlifes music. He talks about the middle class as his roots while living and acting as the ‘KING’. Go kiss Bidens a– traitor…”

The cost of attending became a central flashpoint in the criticism. “I’ve seen Bruce 10x I can’t support any of this message when tickets are 1,000 dollars,” one commenter wrote. “Get over yourself man.”

A third user sharpened that point, posting, “Billionaire who charges $800 for concert tickets claims to represent working class Americans.”

A fourth kept it brief: “Another concert, another political rant. People came for the music, not a lecture.”

Supporters of Springsteen pushed back with equal force. Journalist Aaron Rupar took to X to write, “Bruce Springsteen, tonight in Minneapolis, was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. A true American rock star. Grateful to have been here.”

One defender framed the evening in constitutional terms, writing, “When Bruce Springsteen speaks, it’s not just music; it’s conviction. You don’t have to agree, but you should respect the courage to call out power in real time. Free speech isn’t comfort; it’s confrontation.”

The tour is scheduled to conclude May 27 in Washington, D.C., where Springsteen has stated he intends to have additional words for the White House.
