Teen Narrowly Escapes Death in Valentine’s Day Horror

A 13-year-old boy narrowly survived a brutal attack on Valentine’s Day in Daytona Beach, Florida, when a 44-year-old man allegedly slashed his throat while the teen walked with his family along the boardwalk.

Authorities arrested Jermaine Lynn Long on felony aggravated battery charges; he remains in custody without bond at the Volusia County Jail.

Sullivan Clarke, visiting Daytona Beach for the Daytona 500 with his parents, was walking near the Slingshot ride when Long reportedly approached from behind.

Miraculously, Clarke survived after turning his head at the exact moment of the attack, narrowly avoiding a major artery by just one millimeter.

“I turned at the perfect time,” Sullivan told Fox 35 Orlando, describing how the slight movement likely saved his life.

Jerod Clarke, the teen’s father, recounted the horrifying scene.

“I could see his neck gashed wide open,” he said. “I could see all the way down to the meat.”

His mother initially feared a robbery before realizing the severity of the attack, The Post Millennial reported.

Sullivan was immediately transported to Halifax Hospital, where he received 13 stitches to close the deep laceration. Doctors confirmed the teen survived due to the narrow margin of error.

Authorities reported that Long had been released from jail just four days before the incident, following separate charges in January for aggravated assault involving two men.

His criminal record also includes convictions for battery, theft, and drug possession, and he is a registered sex offender with a prior sexual assault conviction in Nebraska involving a minor, according to WFLA.

Police said Long allegedly approached the teen while he was on his phone, striking his neck in a horizontal motion with a box cutter.

Witnesses, including the teen’s parents, helped identify Long, who was later found near a local restaurant carrying a box cutter and a silver knife.

During questioning, he admitted to touching the boy but denied intentionally slashing his throat, WTSP reported.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has classified the incident as aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Police are reviewing boardwalk surveillance footage to identify additional leads and assess whether there were other potential threats.

Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of the attack, citing Long’s extensive criminal history in pretrial proceedings, according to WFTV.

The attack has raised broader public safety concerns in Daytona Beach, which attracts large crowds for events such as the Daytona 500.

Experts note that even well-trafficked tourist areas can remain vulnerable to violent incidents, underscoring the importance of law enforcement vigilance and community awareness.

Lori Clarke stressed the razor-thin margin that prevented a fatality.

“One more millimeter and he probably wouldn’t have made it,” she told WESH.

Despite the trauma, Sullivan expressed determination to continue enjoying the Daytona 500 with his family, highlighting the teen’s resilience.

Authorities continue urging the public to report suspicious behavior and remain alert in crowded areas to prevent similar incidents.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Jerod Clarke said, “The doctor said if it would’ve been one millimeter deeper, we’d be having a different conversation. We are so lucky our son is alive.”

The family is now focused on recovery, while authorities work to ensure the suspect faces appropriate legal consequences.
