Authorities in Delaware are conducting a death investigation after discovering a 64-year-old woman unresponsive in her home following a domestic dispute call late Sunday evening.
Linda Stevenson was found on the floor of her Oak Hill residence after New Castle County police responded to the scene at approximately 11:15 p.m. Sunday night, according to an official police statement.
First responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but Stevenson was pronounced dead despite their efforts.
The investigation has drawn attention due to Stevenson’s connection to the Biden family through her marriage to Bill Stevenson, who was previously married to former first lady Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975.
Christina Vettori, Stevenson’s daughter, told the Daily Mail that she believes authorities are treating her mother’s death as a possible homicide.
“It’s still a murder investigation,” she stated, though she declined to provide additional comment at this time.
However, New Castle County Police disputed this characterization in their official communication, clarifying that the case is being handled as a “death investigation” rather than a murder probe.
Despite the semantic distinction, the department confirmed that their Criminal Investigations Unit has taken charge of the case, suggesting the matter requires specialized attention.
The body has been transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science, where medical examiners will perform an autopsy to establish both the cause and manner of death, police reported.
Emergency dispatch records obtained by media outlets like TMZ indicated a possible cardiac arrest may have been involved in the incident.
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed in connection with Stevenson’s death, and investigators continue to gather evidence and information.
The former first lady’s connection to the case stems from her first marriage to Bill Stevenson, which lasted five years during the early 1970s.
Jill Biden, whose maiden name was Jacobs, separated from Stevenson in the fall of 1974, moving out of their shared home amid deteriorating relations.
The couple’s divorce proceedings were reportedly contentious, involving disputes over marital assets including Stevenson’s well-known establishment, The Stone Balloon bar.
Bill Stevenson has maintained for years that his ex-wife began a relationship with Joe Biden in 1974, while they were still married.
The Bidens have consistently rejected these allegations, stating instead that the couple first met through a blind date arrangement in 1975, after Jill’s separation from Stevenson was already underway.
