Months after Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was brutally assassinated during a campus event at Utah Valley University in Provo, Utah, Republicans have introduced legislation in Congress to rename a popular street after the conservative figure.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a bill on Wednesday to rename a prominent street in the nation’s Capital after Kirk.
The street previously honored the radical Black Lives Matter (BLM) organization, which took to the streets across America in 2020. After President Donald Trump took office, the BLM slogan on the street was removed.
Mace wants to eliminate the BLM honor and rename it to the “Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.”
Kirk was known for his ability and willingness to engage in civil debate and exchange political discourse.
In a statement, Mace celebrated Kirk’s life and achievements while condemning the heinous attack on the Turning Point founder.
“Three months ago, we lost a champion of free speech and a voice for millions of young Americans,” Mace said.
“Charlie Kirk’s assassination was an attack not just on one man, but on the fundamental American principle declaring every citizen has the right to speak freely and engage in civic discourse,” she added.
“By designating this plaza in the heart of our nation’s capital, we ensure Charlie’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to the First Amendment will never be forgotten,” she continued.
Republicans were outspoken against the BLM slogan in one of Washington, D.C.’s main streets, arguing that it promotes division and chaos.
In the “summer of love,” as it is referred to, many BLM individuals rioted across America’s towns and cities. Shoe stores and malls were looted in the name of “racial justice” after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Alongside Mace, other congressional Republicans have introduced similar measures to honor Kirk, as the Daily Mail reported.
Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R) proposed renaming a street near the White House “Charlie Kirk Way.”
Mace’s proposal comes as conspiracies surrounding Kirk’s assassination spread online, with former Daily Wire host Candace Owens leading the charge.
Since Kirk’s death, Owens has made multiple suggestions and provided insight as to who could have been involved in Kirk’s killing. She does not believe the government’s narrative that suspect Tyler Robinson, who is currently in custody, is responsible for the shooting.
Owens recently made headlines after making the bombshell accusation that Turning Point USA (TPUSA) “betrayed” Kirk. Although she didn’t explicitly state that the organization was involved in his death, she did accuse it of working against its founder.
Such comments garnered the attention of Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk.
Erika was interviewed by Fox News on Wednesday, where she railed against people linking TPUSA to her husband’s death.
“Here’s my breaking point. Come after me, call me names, I don’t care. Call me what you want, go down that rabbit hole, whatever. But when you go after my family, my Turning Point USA family, my Charlie Kirk Show family, when you go after the people that I love and you’re making hundreds and thousands of dollars every single episode going after the people that I love because somehow they’re in on this, no!” she said.
