For years, Democrats have celebrated President Donald Trump’s indictments, saying that nobody in America is “above the law.”
However, some of them didn’t fully understand the message they were spreading.
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) was indicted by a federal grand jury yesterday on charges of allegedly stealing $5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Cherfilus-McCormick was one of many Democrats who focused much of her time addressing Trump’s indictments and proclaimed that he wasn’t above the law.
The House Ethics Committee launched its investigation into Cherfilus-McCormick in 2023.
If convicted, Cherfilus-McCormick could face up to 53 years behind bars, according to the New York Post.
The Department of Justice weighed in on the grand jury’s decision.
Attorney General Pam Bondi called the alleged actions “cynical.”
“Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime,” Bondi said. “No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain. We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice.”
The DOJ alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, among others, “conspired to steal” $5 million in FEMA funds that their family-based health care company obtained in 2021 in the form of a COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract, according to the New York Post.
The Post reported that Cherfilus-McCormick and co-defendant Nadege LeBlanc allegedly planned to use “straw donors” to donate the FEMA funds to the Florida congresswoman’s campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick is in hot water, and her political career could very well end if she is found guilty.
On multiple occasions, the Florida Democrat called out Trump and celebrated the indictments against the president.
On X, Libs of TikTok shared multiple screenshots of posts made by Cherfilus-McCormick regarding the Trump prosecutions.
“This serves as another reminder that no American is above the law,” she said on June 9, 2023, when Trump was indicted on 37 felony counts of allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving office.
On Aug. 15, 2023, Trump was indicted in a Georgia court for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the Peach State.
Cherfilus-McCormick reacted to the ruling in Georgia, writing, “Once again, we are reminded that no American is above the law. Over the course of 2023, the former president has now been indicted four times.”
The Florida Democrat has not yet addressed the grand jury’s ruling or the charges against her. She serves on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
Cherfilus-McCormick’s latest indictment came just two days after she sponsored legislation in the House to establish a Special Envoy in the State Department for the “Human Rights” of LGBT individuals.
