Trump Shrugs Off MAGA Criticism Over Shocking Mortgage Plan

President Donald Trump has found himself at odds with his MAGA base over his support for a 50-year mortgage plan introduced by Federal Housing Finance Director Bill Pulte.

On Nov. 9, the president shared an image comparing the mortgage-related policies of his administration with those of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR).

FDR’s image is accompanied by the words “30-year mortgage,” while Trump’s says “50-year mortgage.”

Trump’s drastic announcement comes a year after the president held a rally at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey.

In August 2024, the president criticized the Biden administration for increasing mortgage costs.

“The typical mortgage payment has tripled since I left office. This kills the American dream for young people,” Trump said at the time.

Now, the president is facing massive backlash from his own supporters over his unprecedented mortgage plan.

Supporters argue that although monthly payments may be lower, Americans will be forced to pay increasingly more in interest over the years.

Trump’s 50-year proposal isn’t new in U.S. politics.

In 2006, California introduced a 50-year mortgage plan similar to the one the president is proposing.

An article from May 16, 2006, detailed the Golden State’s plan to introduce a 50-year mortgage plan to combat “skyrocketing” housing costs.

“This isn’t exactly a reflection of the fact that we are living longer but rather a reaction to skyrocketing housing prices and the slow upward creep of interest rates,” the article states.

As of 2025, the national price of a single-family home has increased by nearly 2% since 2024, with a median price of $ 426,800.

Given that the economy remains shaky, arguably due to the previous administration’s policies, the president is introducing significant measures to help Americans purchase a home.

Conservatives on social media reacted to the president’s announcement in a somewhat disappointed fashion.

Political commentator Chris Stigall, a staunch Trump supporter, defended the president’s record but voiced his opposition to the mortgage plan.

“Trump’s 50 Year Mortgage Plan? Wrong Solution for Young America. They need freedom, opportunity and faith in the free market. Trump Is Still America First-But 50 Year Mortgages Are Not,” Stigall wrote on X.

“Trump floated 50-year mortgages, confirmed by his housing director as a potential ‘game changer.’ Monthly payments could decrease, but borrowers would pay for a significantly longer period,” the Conservative News Daily said.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) ranted against Trump’s blueprint, claiming it will only leave Americans in debt.

“I don’t like 50 year mortgages as the solution to the housing affordability crisis. It will ultimately reward the banks, mortgage lenders, and home builders while people pay far more in interest over time and die before they ever pay off their home. In debt forever, in debt for life!” Greene said.

The Daily Mail reported on the backlash to Trump’s plan, noting that an insider to the president called Pulte’s proposal “moronic.”

“After publicly humiliating the president with his moronic 50 year mortgage plan it’s safe to assume that his days are numbered,” the insider said, referring to Pulte.

Trump addressed the opposition to his plan in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham.

Ingraham asked the president how he felt about his supporters not being too fond of his housing director’s idea.

In response, the president shrugged off such criticism and defended the plan.

“It’s not even a big deal.. all it means is less per month over a longer period of time!” Trump said.
