A 20-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting outside a St. Louis-area Steak ‘n Shake earlier this month, an incident that began with a disagreement at a drive-thru window and escalated into gunfire, leaving one employee dead and another injured.
Authorities say the April 8 incident unfolded at a restaurant in Spanish Lake, Missouri, when officers were dispatched after reports of gunfire.
Responding crews found two employees had been shot during a confrontation with a customer at the drive-thru.
One worker later died at the scene, while a second employee survived after being struck in the hand and taken for medical treatment.
Investigators describe the encounter as beginning with a dispute over a fast-food order placed at the drive-thru window, which reports say involved an argument over onion rings.
According to court documents, tensions escalated rapidly when a drink was exchanged between the customer and employees, followed shortly after by gunfire directed into the restaurant through the service window.
Officials say surveillance footage, combined with cell phone location data and physical evidence, has been central to reconstructing the timeline, according to KMOV News.
Law enforcement officials say those investigative tools, along with multiple witness statements, helped identify a suspect in the hours following the shooting.
Prosecutors later filed formal charges in the case, including homicide and armed criminal conduct charges, moving the case from investigation into prosecution as authorities prepared for court proceedings, according to The Blaze.
Court records identify the suspect as Jada Bell, who is accused of firing shots during the confrontation at the drive-thru.
She is currently being held on a $1 million cash-only bond and is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing as the case proceeds through the judicial system.
The victim was later identified as 32-year-old Chauncia Meekins, a restaurant employee described by relatives as hardworking and compassionate.
Family members said she had been working at the location for only a short time before her death and was preparing for upcoming personal milestones, including her birthday later this month, according to The Independent.
In the days following the shooting, relatives gathered for a vigil outside the restaurant where Meekins was killed.
During the emotional gathering, family members spoke about her life and the suddenness of her death, recalling conversations with her shortly before the incident and describing her as upbeat and full of plans for the future.
“It’s never that serious to take a person’s life over fast food,” Meekins’ mother said, reflecting on the dispute investigators say triggered the violence.
Family members have since called for full prosecution in the case, arguing the incident reflects broader concerns about impulsive violence in everyday encounters.
Authorities have said there is no known prior relationship between the suspect and the victim, and investigators have characterized the shooting as a sudden escalation of a routine customer-service interaction.
